I *always* liked Sophia for a girl but that became too trendy and I nixed it.
I *always* liked Evan for a boy, named DS Evan and now it is pretty popular.
I *always* liked Finley for a boy, but now that is making it's way up the charts as well (and as a GIRLS name?!).
I have a name that everyone else has and I would have liked my kid to be the only one in his/her class with that particular name. I know I can't control that, but if a name is moving up on the charts it makes me want to avoid it. I just want something cute, but not too out there and am really having trouble. We may just end up going with what we like and dealing with it, but it still makes me a little frustrated.
Anyone else avoiding trendy names and not having any luck?
Re: UGH, my name choice is becoming trendy...
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I hear ya! I'm a Jen/Jennifer. Isn't everyone from the 70's, 80's & 90's a Jen/Jennifer...or Sara?
I didn't want our kids to have popular names either, but at the same time, didn't want them to have crazy, off the wall names. DD#1 is still unique without being crazy (I never post it cause I'm that afraid of it catching on...is that weird!?!?) Seems like every time we meet someone new they compliment her name and ask if they can pass it on to someone they know who is expecting a girl. NO! YOU CAN'T!!
DD#2 is named Alayna. Didn't even know Alayna was a popular name when we chose it. Hadn't ever actually heard it before. We wanted to use Layne as a boy name and couldn't come up with a girl name. We swapped the 'e' for an 'a' to make Layna for a girl. Then decided we need a nn that would work with it so we threw an 'A' on the front of it so we could call her Al (that's a small L, not a large i). We totally thought we made it up. Apparently we were very, very wrong as Alayna's are EVERYWHERE these days. Ugh!
Needless to say we have NO idea where we are going with names this time around.

I'm a Jennifer. I actually spell Jenn with 2 "n's" because I needed some way of differentiating between all the Jen's in my classes.
I like Sophia and I'm ticked off it's becoming popular, as is Jack which I also really like. I don't think I'll be changing our choices though...it took me forever to get DH to agree to Sophia because all he thought about was the damn Golden Girls.
Interesting - last year I had 5 friends who had babies:
2 had boys and both named them Finnegan
2 had girls and both named them Emily
1 more had a girl and named her Sophia
The irony is that like PP says back in the 70's we were all named Jennifer, Sarah or Heather (like me) - nowadays if you choose THOSE names there probably will not be another Jennifer, Sarah or Heather in your class - go figure...

My name is Emily, so I've grown up with the popular name (I sympathize with Emma about constantly being yelled at at the grocery store :-P). I never thought I'd name my child a popular name, but now that I'm a little older the popularity of my name honestly doesn't bother me.
We named DS Christopher, after FIL - so there wasn't really any discussion about it's popularity or not. It seems like it'd be a really popular name (and according to the SSA charts, it is) but I've never met another baby or young child named Christopher.
Our name choices for #2 are all gaining in popularity, and that bothers me - although I'm not sure if in the end it will make us not use them or not. We'll have to see when we get to that point, I guess. It makes me sad every time I hear another person using my favorite girl name though (Claire).
