last question - swaddling

We've been swaddling Elise for her nighttime sleep since day 1.  However, I'm wondering what the next step is and when to stop swaddling.  I've heard you can swaddle until they learn to roll over because then it becames a hazard. However, how do you keep them cozy without the swaddle?  If you swaddled, when did you stop?  Did they sleep less at night?  How did you bundle them up?

Re: last question - swaddling

  • J only allowed us to swaddle him for a short time. Even from birth he HATED it but he let us do it cause he was tiny and didn't quite have a mind of his own yet. By the time he was about 3 weeks old we couldn't swaddle him anymore. The Miracle Blanket was a huge waste. He would fall asleep with it okay and then if he woke up swaddled he's start flipping out because he couldn't get free. Getting him to sleep was a mission because he wanted to be cozied up but not swaddled, thus began the almost 2 months of him sleeping on a pillow on our bed. Now he sleeps with his blankie covering his fast.

Honestly it's all trial and error. You just need to help them find something that soothes them.

  • You can either go cold turkey and take away the swaddle or you can start by taking one arm out then taking the other arm out, then taking the swaddle away.  It takes them a little bit to get used to it, but it is better to be safe.  I moved to a sleepsack for warmth.  They are great.  They are wearable blankets.

  • Adri, we are so in the same boat! We use a sleep sack swaddle at night, and I think Javy loves it. He's pretty much outgrown the small, though, and I can't find the swaddle version in size medium, just the regular sleep sack wearable blanket thing. We might have to go with that. It's been on my mind so much for the last week!
  • Once Carley started breaking free from her swaddle, we started using the sleep sack. It's awesome...and you can find them pretty much anywhere.
  • The next step for us was Halo Sleepsacks.  We weaned him gradually (one arm out, then both, then sleepsack), and he continues to sleep in the sleepsack for every night and nap.

  • Those that use the sleepsack, when did you start the transition?
