daytime naps in swing

Elise sleeps great at night, but during the day will only nap on me or in the swing (or in the car/stroller if we're out).  She definitely needs some movement to help her fall asleep during the day.  But, now I'm worried she may not nap well when my mom starts taking care of her.  I asked my mom if she wanted a swing for her house and she said no.

How do you get your baby to nap during the day?  Will she always need the swing or motion to nap?

Re: daytime naps in swing

  • We had a similar problem. We just kept putting her in the crib. I tried really hard to let her not fall asleep on me and just put her down a little early to get used to being in the crib. If she fell asleep in the swing I would transfer her once I knew she was out. It was not the easiest, but we probably made the switch within about 2 weeks. There were definitely some tears shed (on both mommy and baby's end) but it made her a better sleeper for both night and naps once she started napping in the crib.

  • J used to only nap on me or sometimes in his swing but that's since changed and although he will nap in his swing he prefers his crib or the PnP. He's not as comfortable in the swing anymore or on top of me. Now he wants HIS bed.

I tend to operate on the "whatever works" method (within reason of course).

  • Ditto on the "whatever works."

I just know I'm going to hear it from my mom if she has trouble getting her to nap, but maybe it will work for her since it's someone different putting her down.

  • I'm sure your mom will find her own way of getting Elise to nap, even if it's not using the swing. I'm telling myself Javy's babysitter will find her groove, too, and it'll be OK if it's not exactly the same as what we do.
  • C used to love sleeping in her swing when she was Elise's age. The motion and music would put her right to sleep a few minutes after we put her in. If one of us saw she was falling asleep or looked uncomfortable, we'd take her out and lay her in her crib. Other times, when we were either sleep deprived or feeling lazy, we'd just let her sleep in the swing and take advantage of the extra z's she was catching so we could catch up on our own. At this point, even though C was sleeping well throughout the night (for the most part), there was still a little survival/whatever works mode that helped us look less like zombies and more like human parents :)
  • I hadnt considered taking her out of the swing once she's asleep.  I figured I didn't want to wake her.  But, maybe I'll try that and see if it works.
