Cloth Diapering

Bringing diapers to the hospital Q.

I am planning on CD from day one. I'm just getting the diaper bag/my hospital bag started today.

I'm thinking I should bring some of my own sposies just in case CD don't work right away/I am too exhausted and decide to wait.

Would bringing my own sposies so that I he doesn't have to wear whatever random brand they use at the hospital be totally weird? Do I just need to chill out about what goes on my babies butt?

Re: Bringing diapers to the hospital Q.

  • I'm an L&D nurse...I'd say to chill out and just use what they give you. :)

They aren't going to give you a weird off brand that will give the baby a rash or anything. My unit uses Pampers... i believe most do

  • Chill.

I highly doubt 1 or 2 days will make a difference, and I highly doubt you'll care at that point.

  • Definitely relax.

My hospital used Pampers (not w/dry max).  I was honestly more concerned with what was on my butt than DD's the 2 dayswe were in the hospital. Tongue Tied

  • It's your baby's butt, you can do what you want. I would CD right from the beginning.

That being said, if I delivered in a hospital (we had a homebirth), I would still CD. I never used a single disposable that people gave us just in case.I wouldn't think bringing your own is weird, especially if you are going to be charged for diapers.

We would've been charged whether we used them or not.  Whatever we didn't use or left behind was thrown out.  You won't save money by not using their diapers.

  • It's your baby, and you shouldn't feel weird about doing what you want. The birth center/medical center I had DD at used pampers too. They had a stack of them underneath where she slept. You could always replace that stack with ones you want to use and they probably wouldn't even notice. But if you don't get to it, I think either way your LO will be fine :)

Charged? We were not charged for diapers and they sent us home with some....anyways, we planned to CD from the start but DS was much smaller than expected and needed to wear preemie diapers for the first few weeks. We ordered some pre-folds as soon as possible but still relied on the disposables for a bit and I didn't really care which brand they used. If you don't want to buy any disposables, I would just bring your CD's and if something happens and you need to use disposables, use theirs.

  • You are charged for all sorts of things.  I couldn't believe it.  It's not itemized, it's listed as miscellaneous.  It's crazy.  They sent us home with everything, and their reason was we (well, really my insurance) were being charged for it all, so we might as well take it rather than it being tossed.

That being said, if you feel more comfortable using cds in the hospital, then go for it!  We didn't, and I think I would've been overwhelmed with that on top of mastering bfing, but I know of people who have done it and it was fine.

  • I would say don't worry about it and use what they have.  My hospital had Pampers as well.  I've never heard of being charged for them, yikes!  But then again, I never saw a bill so who knows.  100% of my delivery and hospital stay was covered by insurance and they sent me home with TONS of free diapers, formula and everything else they have in their stash!

  • Take the CDs and a wetbag. If it doesn't work out right away, just use what the hospital has. Then you don't have as much stuff to haul to the hospital and back home.

  • Normally I'd say chill, but I know my hospital uses Pampers, and because I'm a bit high strung I've decided to never use a Pampers product (dry max or not)  on my baby if I can help it.  How they handled the whole dry max thing just makes me question the company's integrity.   So... keeping in mind that I'm a little weird about these things, I'd probably pack some of my own disposables.  FWIW, we used sposies until the umbilical cord fell off (9 days)

  • The only reason I would say to just use the hospital diapers is because they keep track of your baby's wet diapers and use a diaper that has a wet strip indicator. They aren't really peeing a ton so if you are using your CD's it may be hard to tell if they have a wet diaper.

This is exactly how I feel. I got a ton of pampers at my shower and returned them all.

A good friend of mine felt like her daughter had a reaction to drymax. Who knows? But they sure were jerks to her about it.

If I do use sposies, I refuse to give pampers my business.

I think I'll pack our own sposies just in case I do want to use them, but just see how things go.

  • Packing disposables is probably more practical - but you could ask what brand they use in advance in case it's a non-issue.

I'd worry that they'd accidentally throw out your CD. That's an expensive mistake, but if they're used to tossing diapers, it could easily happen.

  • I so wouldn't bother. You have enough crap to haul home from the hospital and enough to think about while you're there. You can start CDing the minute you walk in the door, but choose your battles while you're in the hospital. You're hurting, learning to BF, being interrupted at all hours--it's stressful enough as it is without having to haul home a wet bag full of diaper laundry. Our hospital used Pampers newborn sensitive diapers, which don't have Dry Max. They were helpful as PP said because the nurses are watching for wet diapers in the first few days of life and the indicator lets you know whether they actually peed.
