Is there any way to remove mold from clothes?

Our ski closet full of all our equipment and winter gear (hats, gloves, jackets, etc) is in the basement. We did have a bit of water in the basement back in the spring, and when I went to dig out my gloves they smelled TERRIBLE. There was mold on the inside of the basket and everything in it reeked. And DH got out his ski jacket yesterday, and it's also affected--probably everything fabric is.

Any ideas? We can't replace all of this stuff--it's $$$$. I washed my basic gloves in RNG, to no avail--it was only slightly improved. And some of it can't go through the washer.

TIA for the suggestions!

  • For the washable items I'd add a little bleach to the wash load (not a lot, like a couple T so the items hopefully don't fade). Then hang to dry in direct sunlight.

For non washable items you can first try hanging in direct sunlight, but otherwise you might have to take them to a drycleaner (things like a puffy jacket I don't see the sun working all the way through).

  • I would try soaking washable items in white vinegar first and then go to the bleach if you have to but I"m always afraid to use bleach unless I have to because of possible discoloration.

  • Unfortunately, we've found that lemon juice, salt and sun work fabulously.  'Tis hard to find the sun in Dec., though.  Lemon juice can also cause some discoloration, although we haven't had an issue the few times we've done it.
