Preemies

Katie Beth came at 31 wks and 2 days

Hi ladies.

We knew to expect the posibility of having an early baby, after a terribly hard twin pregnancy and the loss of our other daughter at 24 weeks.

I've been in the hospital and on bed rest, but on Wednesday we delivered both of our girls.

Dylan Kate came first and was very small at 9:29 , Then her Sister came at 9:30 weighing 3 lbs and 5 oz.

She was put in the NICU and was doing very well, she was on CPAP for a few hours then changed to a nasal Canula. But then she got a pick line and it ruptured and leaked fluid into her lungs and then ended up having to intubate her last night.

I thought I would introduce myself here because I have many questions. Our NICU staff is wonderful. But i hate to feel like I'm in the way or keeping them from doing what they need to.

  • Welcome. I am so sorry that you lost Dylan. Congratulations on Katie.

The NICU ride is a rollercoaster - some days will be great and the next could be just awful. This is 'normal' in preemie land but just awful on your nerves. You are not in the way! Be as involved as you want in her care: you should be able to take her temp, change her diapers, help reposition her, and help bathe her. Ask questions anytime you have any. She is YOUR daughter and don't be afraid to be involved. If there's anything they need to do and you're in any way 'in the way' they will let you know loud and clear. Ask about doing kangaroo care, try to be there for rounds (usually happens between 8 and noon in most hospitals) so you can speak directly to her attending doctors. GL and ask away if you have any questions here!

  • I'm so very sorry for your loss of Dylan. I hope that Katie has a short and uneventful NICU stay. I'll be keeping your family in my t&ps. Keep us updated!

  • I am sorry for your loss and welcome to the board.  We are a friendly bunch and between all of us I am sure you will get any of your questions answered.  Ask as many questions of the nicu nurses they will teach you everything you need to know.  If you hospital has primary nurses ask to have them.  Then you will have the same nurses most of the time which we found so very helpful.  Congrats on your daughter.
