hyper-lactation syndrome

anyone else heard of this?  we researched why our lo was SO gassy (like abnormally gassy) and found something called hyper-lactation syndrome where mom makes a TON of milk and baby gets a large percentage of foremilk (which produces lots of gas) rather than a good amount of hindmilk (which is more calorie laden and better for baby.)  I can nurse DD for 20-30 minutes and then pump 8 ounces after.  I will frequently spray DD in the face and she gulps the first few minutes because my milk comes rushing out so fast.  Anyone else have this problem?

I'm going to look into this. I spray alot too and have a very gassy baby. Today I hand expressed and soaked 2 cloth diapers because my boobs were so engorged.. I just thought I was a freak because most people here talk about their inability to nurse, not the opposite haha

  • I havent heard of this, but I am having the same symptoms. I have a ton of milk and a very gassy baby. She doesn't seem uncomfortable most of the time though so I am not going worry. But I do have a bunch of frozen milk that I don't think we will ever use so I am looking into how to donate breast milk.
  • It's an oversupply issue it sounds like to me. Try looking up block feedings on kellymom, this is what helped me finally get my overabundant supply under control...it truly was a nightmare.

  • I had an oversupply with my first; not so much this time.  I used to spray DS in the face a lot, I'd spray in the shower, soak through pads, etc.  He wasn't gassy, but ate a lot (he gained 4 pounds the first month)!  You could definitely hear him gulp for the first few minutes.  It's better now...I still leak but not nearly as much - I think DD doesn't need as much and my body knows how to adjust better now.
