High-Risk Pregnancy

Does having PCOS make you high risk?

I have PCOS and am 8 weeks pregnant. I read that it makes my m/s chance 45%. my ob said that is true until 16 weeks. I am also seeing the high risk doc but only saw twice and will again at the nt scan. It sounds like I'm high risk but I'm not sure.

  • I have PCOS and was never told I was high risk due to that alone.

However, PCOS does increase your chances of other things, like GD and pre-e.  Those things do make you high risk.

With DS1, I developed mild pre-e and was induced at 36 weeks.  So far, no signs of pre-e with DS2.  No GD with either pregnancy.  HTH

  • Thanks for the response. What is pre-e?

  • I have PCOS and wasn't considered high risk for that reason either. I also developed pre-e (preeclampsia) and was considered high risk at that point.

Here is a great site to learn more about pre-e: https://www.preeclampsia.org/

  • Ditto the others.  I have PCOS and wasn't considered high risk based on that diagnosis alone.  Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!

  • I have PCOS and my dr has never said I'm high risk because of it.

The only thing is that it took 2 ultrasounds to date the pregnancy (due to the fact that my last 2 periods pre pregnancy were provera-induced).

  • I also have PCOS and was not considered high risk because of it. With my first pregnancy they did the glucola test twice just to be on the safe side (both one hour) about two months apart. But this time around only once seeing as I didn't get GD last time.

Ditto this. I have read that PCOS puts you at a 40% greater chance of developping GD. I was tested early for GD, and diagnosed with it at 19 weeks. My blood pressure has dropped and remained low, so hopefully I will avoid the pre-e risk.

  • I also have PCOS and I am a type II diabetic. From what I understand about PCOS, your chances of miscarriage are higher than the average person if the PCOS has been left untreated. Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance which can then lead to diabetes. I am considered high risk because of the diabetes not the PCOS. But with me - they go hand in hand.

If you've known that you have PCOS and you've been treating it - I wouldn't worry as much about miscarriage. I think this is more for people who have it and are not aware - or are not on any medication to help regulate it.

    Hope this helps! :)
