1st Trimester

Low Thyroid Function

I went in for my first appt yesterday and the blood work results showed my thyroid was low functioning.  The dr said they'll retest at my next appt to see if there has been any change and go from there.  Anyone else have this happen?  What was the outcome?   I'm hoping it was just a fluke and that I don't end up on medication for hypothyroidism.

Re: Low Thyroid Function

  • Assuming that your thyroid was fine prior to your pregnancy, it is not unusual to have it either slow down or speed up as a result of the pregnancy.  Normally it will correct itself once you're out of the first trimester.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Good to know, thanks.  Unfortunately, the last time they tested my thyroid was at least 5 years ago, so we don't know if it was fine before pregnancy.  I wouldn't be surprised, hypothyroidism does run in my family.  I'm just hoping it will correct itself.  I assume that's why my dr. isn't too worried about it just yet.

  • You might need to be on medication just during your pregnancy, but it will be a low dose.  No big whoop.  Better that than having a slow thyroid, and risk causing brain damage to your baby.

  • This also happened for me. Though my doctor said my levels were quite low so she though that it had been going on prior to my pregnancy. I am on medication just a pill a day everyday, though most likely will continue after my pregnancy. For now i will get a blood test every month to see how my levels are and how the dosage of my medication is working. You have to go on the medication if suggested, otherwise as said it can cause brain damage/growth problems for your baby. Just be happy it was spotted and being watched! On the plus side i now have a lot more energy!

  • i have a slight hypothyroidism. no need to worry you take a tiny little pill called synthroid. it regulates you with in a week. for me personally it helped with my intense pregnancy symptoms, and who wouldnt love that?
  • Thanks ladies.  I'm not so worried about taking medication, I definitely will if needed.  I guess my concern is that I've definitely had symptoms for awhile and I'm wondering if it had been going on pre-pg.  Of all concerns, at least this one has an easy fix.

  • Did any of you have any noticable effects of hypothyroidism? I ask because I've been freezing cold (except when I'm sleeping and have night sweats) and was doing a little research last night and hypothroid was one of the things I came across. I have a couple of the symptoms and plan on asking about it at my appt next week.

  • Yes, I've had symptoms, I just assumed they were due to pregnancy.  I have been very fatigued, achy, and beyond freezing lately.  I thought I was just having a harder time adjusting to winter this year, but it has been ridiculous and our heat has been set higher than ever.  Last night, I went to bed with a heating pad, just so I could fall asleep.  I often can't fall asleep because I'm so cold, but then wake up later with night sweats.  Once I read about hypothyroidism, the symptoms make sense.

Good luck at the doctor next week!  Hopefully you get some answers.
