Pregnant after a Loss

I can't find the h/b!!!

I bought a doppler yesterday and last night before I went to bed DH and I tried to find the h/b and couldn't!!! - At this point it should be pretty easy to find right? Should I call my dr? What should I do?!?! Could there be any good reason as to why I can't find it?

Re: I can't find the h/b!!!

  • are you looking low enough?  You want to start really low, like where your hair line would be, stay in one spot and slowly move to other spots.  You might want to try and prop your pelvis up a bit if you can't find it while lying flat on your back.  Give it a little time and be patient, I think you'll find it.  If not and you are worried you definitely can call the OB. Good luck!

  • deep breath hun. At that point it took my dr. a while to find it. And she's an experienced doppler user.

Lie on your back. Try really low right around where your pelvis meets your hip, try one side then the other.

If you're freeked out there is no harm in calling your dr.

  • First don't panic. Look for it REALLY low and move the doppler very slowly. I always found in the early days I had to lay very still and flat on the floor to find it. If I was on the bed or sofa it took a lot longer to find. LO still has a lot of room to hide at 13 weeks. But certainly call your Dr and tell them you'd like to come in and listen to the HB. They should be fine with that. ((HUGS))
  • There were plenty of times that I had trouble, and still do even though she's huge and I know where she is. Sometimes peeing would help, since I have a massive bladder and everything. I would do everything the PPs suggested, plus the peeing thing. Some people say full bladder, but for me it was always better when it was empty for some reason. I hope you find it, but if you're really worried I would definitely call the doctor. ((hugs))

  • I had a difficult time finding the h/b at 13 weeks and it took a long time every time I tried.  I know it's frustrating because you see girls who start hearing the h/b at 10 or 11 weeks.  I agree with PPs that if you're still concerned then call the dr for reassurance.  I hope LO is just hiding from you.

  • How long did you try for? You are using gel, right? Use a lot!!

As others have said, you should essentially be flat, and be looking very low, basically right at your bikini line, starting in the middle. You need to push in quite a bit and angle it down a little too. Having a full bladder can also help. Here's a youtube video  - see how low this girl has the probe?

I think a good policy to use is to not be "allowed" to freak out until you've gotten experienced at finding your baby's heartbeat. Easier said than done, I know. But even my doctor couldn't get my baby's at 14 weeks (though I had been getting it since week 12).

  • No, 13 weeks is way early to find it consistently. And I still have problems since Cami hates the doppler.

DH hid mine and will only give it to me if I promise not to freak out.

You shoul call and go in for a check, only because you aren't going to be able to relax until you hear it. But you are nowhere near the point where it will be easy to find every time.

  • I just got mine (see post I just did), and I concur with above posters -- go really low. like much lower than you expect. and even when I did hear it , it would jump away instantly. I don't think the little one likes it. but just move slowly and low, and I found it again.
