Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone refuse a glucose?

Has anyone ever refused to take the glucose test?  I have such a horribly sensitive stomach just drinking water too fast or anything that tastes too funny makes me vomit.  So, I'm 100% sure I won't be able to drink a whole bottle of the orange.  I don't have diabetes and I keep a check every now and again with a at home meter and I've had my A1C checked, and its always normal.  So, has anyone refused the test?

Re: Anyone refuse a glucose?

  • In have had 3 GTTs. Two one hours-- one at 18 w and one at 30 w. The first one came back normal, the second one a week before it I had a normal A1C and then the GTT came back borderline, so I had the 3hour which then came back normal.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal, and gestational diabetes can strike anyone, even thin people without diabetes history in their family. I don't really see a reason to skip it. I have a VERY VERY strong gag reflex and the drink didn't taste that bad at all and I had no side effects like feeling shaky or anything. The drink basically tastes like if you melted down 10 of those Flav-O-Ice popcicles that you ate in the summer as a kid. It's not bad.

Seriously, you can have GD and not know it from just "how you feel" so go do the test. It's just an hour out of you're life and the consequences of untreated GD are so serious it's not worth the risk. And it's not that bad- I promise!!

This exactly! My drink tasted like flat Orange soda, it really wasn't bad. I had 2 1 hour GTTs and it wasn't a big deal. I was worried I'd get sick or something, but you don't have to chug the drink. You just have to drink it in a 5 minute window (I think that's what they told me at least). Good luck!

  • Why would you risk it? It's 5 minutes of drinking a sweet drink and a few pricks of the needle. Well worth knowing if there's a problem, IMO.

  • No, and I cannot imagine why anyone would. GD is a BIG deal, for your health and the health of your child. So you throw up. You'll live. I'm sure I'll be puking after as well, but I'll do it as many times as I have to to get the reading they need.

You need to talk to your doctor, who I am sure will tell you this test is not really an optional thing. Of course you can choose to refuse any testing, but it's against medical advice to do so in this case.

  • Thanks for the posts ladies.  I've taked a lot of heat from this post as I posted it on 3rd tri (figured lots of those ladies had been through it).  I didn't post a lot about my medical history, but I assumed with all the different regions that are here, there would be someone in the postings who for whatever reason couldn't hold it down, etc.  I am one to take all of my doctors advice and I am also not one who refuses anything becuase I don't want to do it.  I think it has been hard for some to understand that some people can NOT hold anything on their belly, even though it seems as easy as drinking a small bottle of liquid.  If the bottle is thrown up, the test is blown as you all know, I suppose thats why I was curious what others have done.  But, once again thanks for postings and have a beautiful day.
