High-Risk Pregnancy

blood thinners

When I am pregnant (I recently miscarried) I have to have lovenox injections twice daily. I am on coumadin for now. For the 5 weeks I was getting the injections I found it really hard. I was covered in bruises, I felt like I was going to run out of space. The inections were also pretty painful to me (more of a burning pain). I guess I am just looking to hear from others and how you dealt with 9 months of these injections.

Re: blood thinners

  • The bruising will start to go away the longer you're on the lovenox. You might get some sporatic ones or some knots but no biggie. They fade.

As for the stinging, I have found that doing the injecting as slowly as possible helps with that. It doesn't get rid of it completely but it lessens the amount of discomfort and then length of time.

  • When I first started giving myself the injections I wasn't inserting the needle as far as it would go and it caused a lot of pain/bruising.  I found by quickly inserting the needle all the way in and injecting the lovenox at a slow steady pace and quickly pulling the needle out has helped tremendously with the bruising and pain.

  • Also, when I was on Heparin, holding pressure on the area after the injection seemed to help with the bruising.

I know it is awful but it is so worth it. And the injections do get easier after a while!

  • I had a lot of bruising the first month, but not after that. As my belly has gotten bigger, it's harder to find a good place to do the injection. But I no longer insert the needle more than half-way, and it seems to help for me.

My usual regimen is to do my shot, then put a light ice pack on it for 10 minutes or so. It makes me not feel the burning on the days that it still starts to burn.

  • I used to use ice and that really helped but I guess my body has gotten used to it (or i'm better at giving myself the shots) and I don't use it anymore. Also, my doctor said giving the shots in my thigh is fine, so that is where I do mine. And like pp said, injecting as slow as possible is really helpful in alleviating some of the burn.
