Honest Opinions on Girls Names

We wanted something very unique, not too popular, etc. What are you honest opinions on:

Jude* Helene          or             Aleena Jude

*With Jude as a first name we would NOT allow a nickname of Judy.  Also, we realize she may be reminded of "Hey Jude" and we're perfectly ok with that! We are Beatles fans and I'll admit the song had some influence on us.

Re: Honest Opinions on Girls Names

  • I've always heard Jude as a boy's name, with Judith as the feminine form, but I could be mistaken.

Helena Jude flows well for me.

  • Jude: not a fan, but it's not "ZOMG WTH are you thinking?!?"

Aleena: I thought this was spelled Alena? I could be wrong...I'm basing this off of the few Alena-named ladies I know, and have never seen it spelled Aleena. Although, it leaves no guessing as to the pronounciation Smile

So, give a choice of A or B, I'll choose C: Alena Jude

You are correct. Again, we're going for unique vs. "the norm" for our little girl.

So right away, would you think "that's a boy's name"?

Thank you for your honest opinion!

With the spelling of "Aleena", we were thinking pronunciation, so we added an extra "e". We wanted no mistaking it for A-LAY-NUH.

Yes, I would expect to see a boy if I heard Jude. I would go with Aleena (or Alena, or pps suggestion of Helena) Jude.

  • I love Aleena and your spelling of the name. I agree with the other responses that Jude is a boys name. I have never heard of it as a girls name.

  • I think of Jude as a boys name, and I don't see it as working all that well for a girls name, but more power to you if you want to use if for special reasons, it's not a bad name in and of itself. I do like Helene and Aleena.

  • I knew one girl named Jude growing up, and it always bothered me because I think it's a boy's name.  So that's my opinion on that one.  And Aleena just looks made up.  I LOVE Helena and Helene though.

  • Yup, Jude is all boy.
  • Count me as another vote for "Jude is a boy's name."  I really like Helene or Helena though.
  • If you're really looking for the pronunciation of ah-lee-nah and not uh-lay-nuh, what about Alina?  Legit name, legit spelling, far more unusual than Elena, etc...and it gives you the pronunciation you're looking for.

  • The biggest problem I have with it is that I think people would call her Judy.  You can't follow her around at school, shaking your finger at the other kids and saying, "No, not Judy!"  People are going to do what people want and like you, I don't like Judy.

  • There is a romance author (female) named Jude Devorak (or some LN like that) however I would still think 100% boy if I heard/saw it.

I prefer Alina spelled this way, though I did teach a little girl named Ailina- her father was Hawaiian and I alwyas loved her name. Helene is pretty too.

You're thinking Jude Devereaux(last name's a pen name, first name is hers)...and yeah, that's also the only female I've heard of using it as a FN.  While she IS very popular in some circles(her books are consistently popular, anyways), the name still screams "boy" to me.  For a MN it's ok, but I wouldn't use it as a FN for a girl.

  • I would think boy if I heard it, but wouldn't go 'what the heck!?!' if I saw it on a girl.  I'm not one of those people that hates boy's names on girls
