High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-eclampsia and labor?

Hi Ladies,

I had severe PP pre-e with DS. Three days after I delivered him vaginally my BP was 220/110.

DH and I have been looking into TTC baby #2 but are interviewing MFM's before doing so. We just want to make sure that we have the right doctors second time around.

I am so nervous that if I have pre-e how will the baby be delivered. I feel like the stress of labor on my body will exacerbate pre-e. I am terrfied and feel if they just did a c-section it would make me feel better. The first time around with DS I was in labor for 30 hours and pushed for six straight hours..sigh. I don't want a repeat occurence if for some reason we are already diagnosed with pre-e at that point. It makes me terrified because some women have said they have had seizures. Also, in some of readings I found it said that pre-e could come on during labor. I just feel I want it to be the least traumatic that it can be, you know?

Those of you that had pre-e, did you deliver vaginally or via c-section?

Re: Pre-eclampsia and labor?

  • vaginally. I was induced at 35 weeks.

I should have just had a c section, i was in labor 36 hrs, was on magnesium sulfate forever.  my son had to be transported to another hospital with a nicu and I did not see him for 3 days.

I was super nervous about #2. I do not have high bp yet, but I am also on bedrest for a placental abruption which may be related to my pre-e by way of a genetic disorder.  your mfm will test you for these things.

p.s. if you click on my picture, my whole experience with pre-e is in my bio.

    good luck!!!

  • w/ ds#1 I was not allowed to labor b/c my bp was already at 215/116. They pretty much got me stable and did a c-section I was not given any other choice. Although I was so drugged up I don't really remember any of it. W/ ds#2 I wanted to try for a vbac. At 34 weeks my bp kept creeping up and I went into labor and they were unable to stop it. So I labor for more than 12 hours (not sure exactly how long b/c when I got to the hospital i was having contraction every 3 mins and not feeling them at all so I was probably in labor for longer) and barely made it to 3cm. The dr. on call was concerned about my ability to progress and the fact that I'd had a previous c-section. She gave me the option to labor for 1 more hour and see if i made progress or to opt for a c-section. I went w/ the c-section for a number of reasons and i'm glad I did. W/ this one will will just have a scheduled c-section.

I have talked to other women who have labored just fine w/ pre-e/bp issues. I would talk to you dr. about this and see how they feel or what they would recommend.

  • I had my twins csection and got pre-e a few hours after I delivered them. BP was normal when I got to hospital and Low during the csection. My doctor says he still cant believe I got it.

  • My doctor told me it was safer to induce and try to have a vaginal delivery. You can bleed A LOT from a c-section and if you're on mag, it can make it even worse, worse than the bleeding from a vaginal delivery. I think in some cases a c-section can actually be more traumatic.

  • I had a c-section with my pre-e, but I was only 27 weeks, so a vaginal delivery would've been more dangerous for the baby (she was only 2 lbs 1 oz). You should definitely discuss it with your Dr, and they may well suggest a c-section or at least give you the option. A lot will depend on how early and pre-/post- delivery your pre-e potentially turns up.
  • I was induced at 31 weeks with severe pre-e. They had me on magnesium sulfate for 2 days so DS's lungs could mature before delivery.  I was in labor for 14 hours and able to deliver vaginally. My little guy was 3lbs 3oz. They thought at one point I would have to have a c-section b/c I wasn't dialating at all and I got bad fluid in my lungs and they had to do a chest x-ray before they OK'd an epi.  It was a nightmare scenario all around.  With this pregnancy I've been absolutely terrified at times of getting it again.  The anxiety and mental stress is definitely worse for me than the physical symptoms have been.  I interviewed MFM docs and found a place I love, so I feel much better about my chances of them catching it early this time around.   Good luck!

  • I developed pre-e at 40w5d and had an emergency induction. I delivered vaginally after 15 hours of labor. Labor and delivery were very normal and DD was fine throughout.

The only thing out of the ordinary was that I was unable to get an epidural due to low platelet count.

I completely agree! The stress has been the hardest part for me, too.
