VBAC

I am sure this has been asked before but....

How long did you wait or were told to wait between your c/s and your VBAC?

I am wondering this becasue all the places I have read have said 18 months between deliveries. Meaning I could get pregnant if I wanted at 9 months ( I would like to try again around DD 1st birthday) However a local doula told me that its best to wait 2 years between deliveries, meaning I could get pregnant when DD is 15 months. Not that its a HUGE deal but I was just wondering.

Re: I am sure this has been asked before but....

  • Thank you for asking this because I've been wondering the same thing.  I forgot to ask my OB at my last appt.  We don't plan on TTC until summer (after DS turns one/after my next annual where I want to discuss my VBAC wishes with my OB), but just curious what others were told.

  • The minimum that a provider will say is usually 18 months, though it depends. If you are staying with the same provider, or ask around a bit when you are close to ready, you will be able to find out what they are comfortable with. There are certainly providers who do VBACs with less time between and women who are successful, and there are some providers who prefer more time in between. My old provider suggested not TTC until DD was 2.

  • It will be over 2 years between ours.  That said, I think the older recommendation was 2 years, but newer evidence shows 18 months and even earlier is fine.  Talk to your provider, because different providers may have different guidelines for what they're comfortable with for their patients.

  • I am going to be switching providers because my current OB has told me from the begining that I am not a canidate for a VBAC. She has told me that I have a 1-3 % chance to deliver vaginally and she wont let me try. (I dont think she lets anyone try)

So I am traveling 60 minutes away to go to a new provider. I am not pregnant yet but just wanted to see what others were told. I plan on making an appointment with my new doctor some time after the first of the year so that we can hopefully go over my medical records and determine what is best for me.

  • The further out you are, the better your scar will have healed and the less likely that providers will look at you funny. If you are under 18 mon then the rupture rate increases. Ours will be 19/20 months apart. My MW is okay with it, but not thrilled.
The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down: 4/27/07 - Got engaged! 8/31/08 - Got married (to my best friend)! 12/30/08 - Got Pregnant! 9/3/09 - Welcome to the world, Elias Solomon! 8/16/10 - Got Pregnant, again! 5/14/11 - Welcome to the world, Talia Hadassah! 1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
  • I think optimally you should have at least 18 months between deliveries.  But I think even if it's earlier than that, the risk of UR is still low.  There is a poster on here, rach03k, who had a VBAC only 13 months after her cesarean and her doctor was fine with it.

My daughter will be around 2 years and 8 months old when I have this baby.  We waited that long not because of any concerns about UR but because I just wasn't ready to have another baby sooner than that.  2u2 terrifies me! :)

  • My previous OB suggested 18 months, but said he had delivered VBACs that were closer than that.
