How did it feel when your baby dropped into your pelvis?

I had an ultrasound yesterday and baby girl is no longer breech.  Yay!  The doc said she's head down, so no ECV for me (for now), thank goodness.

Also, last night, as I was watching t.v., I felt a ton of pressure in my pelvic area, bum, and groin all of a sudden and started having little nerve twitches down there.  I couldn't get comfortable no matter how I moved and I had to pee every 10 minutes.  Sleeping, needless to say, wasn't easy.  I think it was her head dropping into my pelvis, but now I'm not too sure because most of the pressure has lightened up.  I have a super short torso so I can't really see a difference from the outside, but I didn't expect to because she doesn't really have anywhere to go.

Does this sound like lightening/dropping to you gals?  Have any of you had/are having a similar experience?  I'm paranoid now that she flipped around again and that's why the pressure has released.  Sometimes it feels like her head is back up on my right side again, but I'm no pro.  I hate this guessing game.

Re: How did it feel when your baby dropped into your pelvis?

  • Sounds like it to me. I get a lot of pressure where it feels like my bones are a bit bruised or something. I think you'd feel if she flipped around and my midwife said that babies kind of yo yo where they'll dip a bit lower and then kinda come back up a bit. It doesn't really mean too much, my boss (who I nannied for and am very close with) told me with her third baby, he never dropped..

  • It felt like he was going to fall out the bottom.
  • to me, it felt like he was gonna fall out of my ute. i seriously had to walk almost gingerly because every step i could almost feel his skull rocking against my pelvic bone.
  • With DS, it felt like a lot of pressure down below, but he was a preemie and only weighed 4.5 lbs at birth, so the pressure wasn't as strong. With DD (in this full-term pregnancy), it feels like her head is going to snap my pelvic bone. It's weird how so much of the pressure is on the front of my body at the pelvic bone, and not as much straight down.

This too. Sometimes I feel the head rocking around. Today we walked to our midwife appointment and I felt like my baby was going to punch a hand through...funny enough she felt the position and said that the hand was resting really low down by the face...so I guess I was right :P

  • Thanks everyone.  Sounds like how it felt last night.  I guess I'm wondering if, once you feel that initial pressure, you continue feeling it until delivery time or if it eases up a bit even though the baby stays low?

  • the day i felt it the WORST, was the day i delivered.. i would guess the pain probably continues after the baby drops. it might get worse though as the day rolls on..?
  • Other people already answered your question, but I'll state my experience as well.

I was also unsure that the baby was dropping at first. And, it definitely happened over a few days (also, I think it continues to drop after it first drops), with forward and backward progress as you describe. I did not notice a change to my outside look at first, but after some time I realized that my belly button was pointing down and it had not been before. The belly also feels tight and round way at the bottom, when it used to feel mushier there (like now there is a head there, and there used to be amniotic fluid). Not sure if that change was apparent at the beginning of dropping, though.

In terms of feeling, the biggest change was pain! Every once in a while, the baby head-butts my cervix and/or pelvis. It's not so much that I feel constant pressure and the bowling-ball-between-my-legs feeling. (Then again, for other pregnancy-related feelings, I've been waddling for months now, so that could mask the bowling ball feeling.) Rather, I feel this intermittent painful slam of the head. It feels like bone against bone so I thought it was his/her head hitting my pelvis, but the OB said something about the baby hitting the cervix. That could be it instead--I find it painful when anything touches/slams my cervix from the other end. I had thought that dropping would mean no more baby in the ribs, but that didn't change much.

The other change has been movement way low where it didn't exist before (except maybe super-early in pregnancy). I feel the movement in the crease between my legs and torso, which is a quite odd sensation. I also feel it so low it's basically at my pubic bone. That movement usually does not hurt--just little hands or something fluttering around the child's face.

  • I didn't feel anything except y heartburn eased up and I could see a difference. When my doctor said she was a 0 station I was shocked.

I also went into labor the next day. Eeep!

  • Sounds like it to me, too.  I had incredible achiness and cramping in my hips!  So bad it keeps me up for hours at night sometimes.  I did have some general pressure in the area as well and little twitches in my legs and pelvic area.  Today is my due date and I'm hoping my little man gets a move on, mommy is impatient!
