Babies: 3 - 6 Months

She doesnt hold the bottle!

DD doesnt hold her bottle. She can she just doesnt quite get the concept that you have to tilt it a little to make the milk come out LOL. She will be 5mths next week and alot of ppl have told me thier LO was doing it by then. Anyone elses LO not holding the bottle on thier own. And moms of LOs that can... did it just happen one day? LOL we practice, she holds it the whole time but like i said doesnt get that she has to tilt it so someone just has to tilt it up for her.

Re: She doesnt hold the bottle!

  • I was under the impression it took babies longer than 5 months to grasp a bottle and feed themselves completely. My nephew is 8 months old and he doesn't feed himself yet.

  • Yea I'm pretty sure it takes longer for most babies than 5 months old.  And no not here yet.

  • I have never in my life heard of a 5 month old holding his or her own bottle. That seems WAY early to me.

  • My DS is only 4 months but he has started to show interest in controlling the bottle but won't hold it himself.  He'll hold it with me and push it away but can't manage it himself yet.  My friend's son held his bottle with his feet at 4 months (LOL) and another friend's daughter held her bottle at 5 months and couldn't figure out the tilt=milk thing either.  I wouldn't worry about your LO as babies have their own time line and as you well know, one day they wake up and poof - new skills!

  • DS is 3.5 months and he holds his bottle for probably 1 or 2 feedings a day. He is very interested in holding it and now he has the strength to do so when its a 4 or 5 ounce bottle. My friend's daughter is 8.5 months and she just recently (the past 3 weeks or so) has started holding it. It totally depends on the child. DS probably won't hold it solely on his own for every feeding for a while.

  • really?!  Well sounds like i know some liars then LOL. It didnt really sound normal to me.. i mean half the time she barely knows what the heck her hands are doing... but ppl kept telling me... "Oh my LO did, thats weird yours cant"  well now im not worried! LOL thanks guys

  • DD is 5 months and doesn't hold her own bottle yet. However, when she first started day care I remember seeing a baby holding his own bottle very well, and he couldn't have been much past 5 months. (Her room is up to 6 months). I doubt that is the norm, though.
  • FWIW, my DD (my almost 3 yr old) never held her bottle! Her last bottle was when she was almost 13 months old- she never had any interest in holding the bottle. Even tried to teach her to. Would not do it.

I hope my DS will hold his bottle eventually.Well I think I do. I look back to those times with DD and really enjoyed the time with her. I cried during her last bottle feeding.

  • My little guy will be 6 months old next week, and he's just starting to show an interest in holding his bottle.  He'll grab at it when we're gonna feed him.  He's grabbed onto the end of his bottle (Playtex Ventaire that has small indent on bottom) and held it that way but not for the whole feeding.
  • I can't say if it is normal or not, but my ds can hold his bottle and has been able to for about 2 weeks. I just make sure and keep an eye on him and at times I do have to help him towards the end so that he tilts it enough and doesn't suck any air. But there are also times he is too tired or just doesn't feel like it.
  • Everly is 5 months old and doesn't hold it yet. She can sometimes but it's not to feed herself - just playing with it. I really don't care if she learns any time soon - I enjoy our time together when I feed her.

My friend's LO is going on 9 months and still doesn't hold her own bottle for every single feeding.

Be snarky to your friends telling you that. Say, "Well if I could just stop her from walking around the house & singing Christina Aguilera songs then maybe we'd have time to practice her holding her own bottle! I'll try to fit it in between her piano and tennis lessons!"

     ;)

  • A sheet that the Pedi gave us said we should start encouraging LO to hold the bottle around 7 months, so I wouldn't worry about it.  Our feedings are taking longer these days, because she keeps knocking the bottle away trying to touch it.
