TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

finally heard from OB and the plan (longish)

My ob called me today and she said it?s time for an RE and recommended 2.  so I called the one and have an appt. for next tues.  However, before I could even go I had to get authorization from my ins. Co.  so thankfully they enrolled me.  If I hadn?t had said I was trying for a year after the m/c she would have told me, I had to keep trying!!!!  So thankfully her and I both know I lied and said yes.  I think she secretly wanted to enroll me probably b/c of my horrible past w/ pregnancies.  Ugh.  so thankgod!!!!!

When I spoke the lady at the RE office she said w/ levels like mine it?s going to be very difficult to get pg.  L  she said they don?t sugar coat anything but they?ll try and work w/ me.  So next weeks appt. is for about 1.5hrs and DH is coming w/ me b/c they need to take blood from both of us.  He?ll have to have a semen analysis too but not that day.  i think they'll test my AMH and I?ll have an u/s etc? I hope I?m up for all this b/c it?s going to be a long road.

Thanks for listening!!

Re: finally heard from OB and the plan (longish)

  • Glad you are going to an RE.  I am not thrilled with them saying it's going to be difficult getting pregnant - quite frankly that is bull.  Esp going off of just FSH levels at this point.  It may be difficult as in sex = baby, but I bet the right plan will give you a baby.  My RE never had any doubt that we'd be successful, it was finding the right treatment for us. BUT your levels are not a doomsday as I keep saying.  I have low ovarian reserve and high FSH - I am also two months away from being 39.   It sucks, but it can and will happen.  You need a team that is going to be more encouraging to make this a much easier experience for you.  If this is a debbie downer RE that is only in it for those that are easy, then find another RE.  Sadly there are RE that only go for best cases so that their results stay high.  Be sure to check them out on SART before making any commitment.  Ask them for their history of success with case similar to yours, etc.

  • I'm glad you got a referral to the RE. You may want to call the second one too, that's pretty disheartening that they were immediately so doomsday about it. The AMH test will be good too, as further testing of your ovarian reserve. FSH can fluctuate substantially from month to month and even day to day, and your result could've been different if the blood were drawn 12 hours earlier or later. AMH doesn't fluctuate, so the two measures together will give you a better idea.

Dimished ovarian reserve may mean IUI or IVF is what you guys have to do. But my AMH is dismal - 0.8 when it should be around 3 for my age. (I don't know my FSH, my RE felt there was nothing to be gained from testing that once we had the AMH results, given the fickle nature of FSH. But suffice it to say, an AMH of 0.8 would be equivalent to a very, very high FSH) But in spite of my shat ovarian reserve, I have gotten pregnant 4 times unassisted, and am responding very well to pretty moderate doses of meds during this IVF cycle.

I do think that DOR is troubling when you are young, because it's not simply the natural aging process at work - there's something speeding that process up. But the high FSH reading isn't necessarily the nail in the coffin. I still have yet to see if any of the eggs they will retrieve this cycle are worth a rat's_ass, but so far according to my doctor, my cycle is going perfectly and I am responding to the meds exactly how they want me to.

Oh i'll definitely check them out, i didn't even know you could do that.  My OB recommended this RE over another one b/c she said they are very personable and don't just categorize you etc... when i spoke to the RE they said they don't sugar coat anything so maybe that's why she said it's not going to be easy but that's why i'm coming to them in the first place.  they did seem nice so i hope they are, if not i can always go to the other place my ob suggested.

it's definitely nice to hear some success stories like yours kona.  :o) i definitely need that right now.

it's good to know about other's experiences and definitely gives me some hope when i lost it all in one day yesterday.  I'll definitely keep in mind about the 2nd RE.

  • Sounds like you got some good advice! Good luck and try not to panic about any one number.
  • I'm glad you were able to get an appointment so quickly! Like PPs said, don't be too discouraged by your FSH numbers. Mine went down by 3.3 between my two draws.. first in August, second in December. Even if your numbers are high, there are always treatments that they can do. Good luck at your appointment!

  • I'm not a fan of them being so pessimistic, but I understand them not wanting to sugar coat things.  I think there are a lot of things you can do about fsh levels, so don't get too down just yet.  See how the first appt goes & then make a decision on if you like them or not.  Sending you hugs!!

  • I'm glad you got the RE referral and it didn't take you long to get an appointment.

I agree with others that it may be good to meet with both REs.  I sat down with 2 REs and chose the one I felt more comfortable with.  With an RE, you're going to be seeing them a TON and making a lot of hard choices, so its good to have someone that you truely trust.

I wouldn't have expected them to tell you that over the phone until they got all of your info and more test results back.  I hope its not that bad.

This was my first thought too.

I'm glad you got an appt so quickly. Hopefully their attitude will change once you get there. Good luck!
