sleep question

Elise had started sleeping 6 hours straight through from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at around 5 weeks old. However, we did notice a couple of times that if she woke up around 11 p.m. for a feeding she would then sleep until 5 a.m.  So, DH started waking her for a feeding or dreamfeeding her around 11 p.m. each night to try to get her to sleep until 5 a.m.  At first, it worked, but now she's inched her way back to waking at 3 a.m. for a feeding.  Sometimes, I've offered the paci while I prepare her bottle and she'll sleep a little longer (30 mins to 1 hour), but she's no longer giving us that 6 hour stretch. Her last feeding now is around 8 p.m. and she's out like a rock after that.  So, should we continue doing the "dream feed" at 11 p.m. or just wait for her to wake up on her own?  That's the only feeding DH does at the moment.  We'll probably split the feedings more evenly once I go back to work.  But, for now, should I just tell him to help out with the 8 p.m. feeding and forget about the "dream feed" at 11 p.m.?

Re: sleep question

  • Wow! Even with the 3 am waking, Elise is a great sleeper! We didn't get 6 straight hours until Nico was probably 6 months old and he didn't STTN (7-7 until 11 months old!). I'm of the camp that you never wake a sleeping baby,so personally I wouldn't wake her up at 11 pm. I think that at 2 months old, if she wakes it it's probably because she's hungry so I would just feed her if she wakes up. In a couple of months, I think you can offer the paci instead of a bottle for either the 11 pm or 3 am wake.

  • I cant complain.  She really is a good sleeper at night.  During the day, she fights naptime, but with a little help takes catnaps.  I feel kind of bad about the dream feeding like if we messed up her own schedule and were interrupting her 6 hour stretch.  And, I only offer the paci to calm her while I prepare her bottle.  If she falls back asleep, I leave her alone.
  • After 1 mo, pedi said not to wake up baby to feed.  However, if they were sleeping 6 hrs straight after 11pm feeding, I would do the dreamfeed.  But since she wakes up anyway now, I'd skip it and feed her on demand.  Have dh help you with the 830 feeding so he can spend some QT w/ baby.

  • Thx, ladies!  I'm not going to wake her or do the dream feed.  DH really wanted to continue the dream feed.  He even told me that he doesnt really wake her up and she slept right through it.  But, I just had him help with the earlier feeding.  I'll just go back to feeding on demand and going to sleep when she does.  We'll revisit any sleep issues when she's older.
