2nd Trimester

Going Crazy

Hi everyone! Im 19 weeks pregnant with my first and I feel like Im totaly over worrying things. Two things on my mind: At my 15 week apointment I had gained 5lbs. I steadily continued to gain about a pound a week until this week- I lost a pound and a half. Judging by how much I have been eating I am really surprised. Is that something I should be nervous about. This leads me to worry number two- I am obsessed with feeling my baby move. The only way I have been feeling it is with my hands directly on my belly. The weird thing is that I was feeling it a whole lot more and now I hardly do. I was thinking maybe as I grew the baby found more room and maybe its back is now towards my front so I dont feel it as much. I know I can call my doc but I would be calling him 10 times a day. All I need is some encouragment. Funny part is I am a nurse so I think I know way too much for my own good. If anyone can help me that would b great!

Re: Going Crazy

  • If you are a RN then you know ... so what is happening is stressing out! Maybe you need to take it easy and talk to your mommy friends face to face for encouragement! Take it easy!

  • I am a first timmer too - so I understand you being nervous about everything. I also have a lot of friends who have had kids and have asked them millions of questions. From my friends' experiences - having some weight gain more some weeks and less others is normal. And also - a pound and a half could be attributed to something like water weight or a difference in clothing or scales. I am a Dietitian and I always tell people to look at the over all picture (not just one point / number) If you keep losing weight, then it is cause for concern, but one weight could just be a little off. I have always been told your baby will get all it needs from you either way.

As for movement - from what I understand, a normal pattern usually isn't more obvious until like 28 weeks (give or take a few weeks maybe). Lots of movement one day and then very little movement the next is normal. I have had lots of days when I hardly feel our little one, and then I will have a more active day after that. But if you're concerned, it doesn't hurt to call and speak with your doctor.

  • I might be smelling MUD here, but I'll still respond. It's a slow morning.

You lost a whole pound and a half?!? As a nurse you should know that this could be caused by a zillion and five factors, your shoes, if you pooped before your visit, how much water you drank.

  • I'm not a nurse, but I do freak out about everything related to this pregnancy!  The movement thing is normal. The baby can move routinely then not so much for a few days. I think 26 or 28 wks is when it's supposed to remain consistant and you can count kicks.  As far as the weight thing, it's not a lot of weight, but worth mentioning to your Dr.  I fluctuate based on time of day and how hydrated I am... I always forget how much of this is water weight!  Probably nothing to worry about though :)

  • TRUST ME - You WILL feel your baby all over the place soon. For some people it's later than others. Only in the last 2 weeks have I really felt the twins poking and bumping me a lot without my hands on my tummy. My DH only felt a kick for the first time 2 days ago. Really... relax. Everything you have described is perfectly normal.

One of my BFFs is an RN, and I think she is like you - she's experienced so much happen with patients that when she is either sick herself (or if she was pregnant) it becomes hard for her not to project some of the worst things she's seen. Remember - you are you, your experiences are unique, and you are OK.

If you're a nurse you should know that the human body does fluctuate in weight.  It can be something as simple as the time you weigh your self.  Now... when we do daily weights on a patient, what time do we do them??  Before breakfast, at the same time... everyday.  What is the rationale behind this?  Weights have a variability range.

Here... go drink a 32 ounce Big Gulp from 7-11.  Congratulations... you're 2 pounds heavier.

Your weight gain may have also been a lot of water weight.  I mean, the baby sure wasn't gaining a pound a week from weeks 15-19, so you were probably retaining water.

So... just what kind of nurse are you?  Because if you know way too much for your own good, I'm a little concerned.  You've failed at comprehending and applying one of the basics of patient care.
