TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

HSG.. quick question

HI ladies-

I go for my HSG next Monday.  I have the antibiotics to take, but I saw some of you take asprin before hand as well.  For those of you who have had these before, how is the cramping after?  My husband said he would go with me if I feel like I won't be able to drive after (I live in Northern Virginia and have to drive into Maryland for it, so I'll need to drive for about 30-40 min after)?  Just your thoughts before I make him take the afternoon off from work?

Thanks!

Re: HSG.. quick question

  • I was told to take 4 advil 2 hours ahead of time. I did. And while it was uncomfortable during the procedure. After it was over, I was totally able to drive (and did). I could have gone to work after too but I didn't have to. I even drove by the mall to see DH at work. Good luck!

OH and my SIL had two done, she said the first one was horrible and wasn't able to drive after but for the 2nd one, she took advil and it made a big difference.

  • I think I took 3 advil about 45 minutes before it.  Mine wasn't too bad.  I could have gone back to work, but I had already taken the whole day off.  I had no problem driving and no cramping once it was done.  The procedure itself is really quick so you won't have pain for long.  Good luck!

  • OH good, I was hoping this wouldnt be a long drawn out procedure.  I will definitely take some advil.  Appreciate the advice.  I took the rest of the afternoon off.

  • There is some prep time, but the actual procedure is probably only 5 minutes I think - maybe even less.  They insert the catheter, shoot the dye in, and then you can watch it flow through your ute and tubes on the screen.  Watching the screen helped distract me too since it's pretty cool to see.  It's mostly just uncomfortable and awkward, but there can be some pain if you have any blockages in your tubes.  You might want to bring a pad just in case you have a little spotting.  My nurse gave me one, but it's good to have one if you need it.

  • Oh I wouldnt have thought of that, thanks.  It may be odd, but I like watching those things to see what's going on inside your body.   My day 3 testing is tomorrow (2nd time, I had to repeat it), so although I miss seeing a baby during the ultrasound, I do enjoy seeing what the doctors are talking about.

  • As long as there is no blood involved I like looking at all that stuff too.  IVF isn't fun, but it is cool getting ultrasounds everyday and seeing the follies really growing.  GL with all of your testing!  I'm heading to bed now so make sure you update us with your results.

  • I would take advil beforehand. I drove home by myself after both of mine. My first was painful and couldn't be completed but that was due to the crappy dr doing it (had to go elsewhere to get it done not my regular dr), the second time it was much better and I had no pain.

  • I took 4 advil about 15 min before my appt was scheduled, so it ended up being about a 1/2 hr before the procedure.  I had absolutely no cramping during or after.  I drove myself there and home.  But I know other women are not as lucky.  I think from what I have heard, the cramping is the worst during the actual procedure, so you would probably be okay to drive.

  • I took the advil before the proceedure and it was uncomfortable during, but fine was fine afterwards.  My mom drove me since the paper that the doctor gave me said to have someone drive you home.  I could have driven though.  My apt was 50 miles from my house.

  • I took 4 advil about an hour before the test.  The cramping was pretty painful but only lasted like two minutes.  I was totally fine afterwards and drove home.  I then left that afternoon to go out of town (drove 1.5 hrs) and was totally fine.  Had a teeny bit of spotting that day.

  • They're usually a bit of cramping during the procedure that you quickly recover from, especially if you take your 4 Advil (not aspirin!) tablets about a half hour beforehand.

Have you had one done before? The reason I ask is that if you have a good idea your tubes are OK, it should be a breeze. I went into mine last week thinking I'd be golden, only to have it be one of the most painful experiences of my life. Both tubes were 100% blocked, and it felt like someone was setting off a stick of dynamite in my ute.

That said, after I sat down for a bit and had a drink, I was able to drive no problem. Just spotted and cramped for the rest of the day.

  • I have one tomorrow so I'll be able to let you know then, but from what I have heard... the pain is mostly during the procedure and you're fine afterwards. My nurse told me to take advil before so I plan to.

  • Well I had to cancel the HSG.  We found out today after my 2nd "day 3" ultrasound that I have luteal phase deficiency (they think I ovulated between Thursday-Saturday and my period came Sunday). So I'm on Prometrium for the next 10 days, then I will do another "day 3" ultrasound and go from there.  Lets hope that helps to level out my "wonky" (as my RE calls them) cycles.  If not, then I'm on bcp for a cycle.

Bitter sweet..at least I know what's keeping me from getting pregnant.
