GBMC

Can anyone tell me if GMBC is a good hospital to deliver or has anyone had Deborah Hebb as their OB?

Re: GBMC

  • We had a fabulous experience at GBMC. I was there for 5 days for a scheduled c-section and only had one nurse that wasn't fabulous (she thought me asking for an ice pack was akin to a shot of morphine). The accommodations were great, the staff was friendly, I was cared for wonderfully and my husband kept commenting on how it was more like a vacation than hospital stay. We had an LC come each day to check on breastfeeding and the nurses were very prompt in responding when I called. I was super happy with GBMC!

  • Ditto all that PP said. I delivered both DDs there for scheduled c/s and was very pleased both times. The first time there was only one nurse I didn't care for, and the second time I liked everyone. The baby nurses are super helpful in teaching you how to care for your baby, if you are not experienced with infants. (I had no clue what to do with DD1.) I recommend GBMC and would return for a future pregnancy.

  • I delivered there & had a wonderful experience!  I didn't have her as my OB though, my regular OB was on call (Dr. Akman).  I had an induction since I was over a week late & Dylan was getting big.

  • I delivered at GBMC for my first with a c-section after a failed induction and will be having another c-section in January with my second.  I have nothing but good things to say about GBMC and their staff.  I cannot speak about the OB you asked about as I see another OB.
  • We delivered at GBMC, and had a wonderful experience.  I was induced due to low fluid levels, and had a successful vaginal delivery.  The staff couldn't have been nicer, and really made a first time mom feel comfortable.  The rooms were also very nice.  GL!

  • This got long... Sorry!

I had a pretty decent experience delivering at GBMC. I had to undergo an emergency c-section, but it was necessary because LO's heart rate was decelling after my water broke. I had 3 gripes about delivering there...

    1. After DS was born, a nurse went to get his cord blood gasses. Apparently, she wasn't wearing her goggles and blood squirted into her eye. So, in the first few moments of my son's life, I have to have blood taken for a HIV test. That will always be in my memory now.

    2. I had sent DH home to get some rest the 1st night I was there. He didn't get any sleep the night before because I was in labor and the aforementioned heart rate issue. I also knew that the nurses would be in and out all night long checking on me (since I was well drugged up from the c-section) and to bring DS back for me to BF. Well, its apparently GBMC's rule that your LO cannot be left alone with you if you're alone because of the drugs. Well, the nursery nurse was training another nurse and dropped DS off to me, asked if I was ok, and left me with him. I was having a hard time reacting quickly to things (because of the drugs) and DS was SCREAMING! My nurse came in and realized what was going on and chewed out the nursery nurse for leaving me alone with DS.

    3. On my 3rd day of my stay, I had what DH and I call my "mommy meltdown" because of one of the lactation consultants. My milk hadn't fully come in yet and DS was losing weight. I was totally against the idea of formula since everything I was told and read basically said that formula was the devil, so I didn't want to use any. This LC came in after DS had fussed at the breast, and I was getting upset so I had put him in his bassinet so we both could calm down. The LC threw a fit, told me that if he didn't start to gain weight, then they were going to feed him formula, and then grabbed my breast and DS's head and shoved us together. DS, of course, screamed and she said that I needed an intervention. So, she gets the breast shield, syringes, and glucose water. He still wasn't gaining weight. So, I felt that I had no other option than to formula feed him. To this day, I pump and bottle feed. I really wanted to breast feed, and tried again after I got home. I don't have alot of extra $, so going to a private LC just wasn't in our budget and I wasn't going to call the warmline after that experience. I had little success on my own, but it just wasn't working. I'm still sad about it to this day.

During my meltdown, the nurses on hand were very supportive and understanding. They reassured me that while the choice was hard, giving my baby formula was the best thing for now. They got me pumping to help my milk come in, made sure I was always comfortable, and tried to let me rest as much as possible.

This is FYI- The food was pretty good, and we found out that one "meal" consists of 2 entrees... So, DH was able to pick one and I picked one off their menu. Order early, because they close at 6pm, I believe (I'm used to eating dinner around 8pm). I was told that GBMC provided toiletries, but I brought my own and was never offered any. I also brought my own towels because the ones provided were tiny and scratchy. They send you home with a bag full of pads for you bleeding, which was nice because they were bigger than the ones sold in stores. They also tell you to clean out the bassinet's stash of diapers/wipes/formula/etc. to get you home and started. Leave the linens tho!

Sorry this has gotten very long. I'm sure these things happen everywhere. I also am very unlucky person! I will report that DS is a very healthy baby who is growing and developing faster than the norm. I, of course, am still dealing with ppd, but that's a different issue all together. I guess my word of advice would be to speak up about anything you want and just be prepared for anything! Good luck!
