When to go to 1 nap?? (sorta long)

I think yesterday was a fluke.  Clark is typically taking a nap 2 hours after getting up in the morning and then 3 hours after is first nap ends.

Yesterday DH and I put him down for his first nap at 945am and my mom came over to watch him so we could get shopping done.  She said she woke him at noon to eat lunch etc and to get him back on schedule and tried to lay him down at 250pm and he just wasnt going to sleep she said so when we got home at 330pm he was awake and seemed okay but was also seeming tired so after she left I tried to lay him down at 4pm and he wasnt having it so I said okay then we'll just skip all together and go to bed right at 6pm.  Figured out we all kind of forgot his 3rd bottle of the day (would have been after 2nd nap) which is why I think he was crabby but anyways......how do you know it's time to just go to 1 nap??   Thanks for making it this far in my post - it wasnt suppose to be this long!!

Re: When to go to 1 nap?? (sorta long)

  • We're not totally at the one nap point yet, and E is 16 months. It's my understanding that you know it's time for one nap when the length of the two naps starts to get shorter and/or LO's bedtime routine starts to suffer.

IDK, though. My kid naps like crap. Seriously. And she's inconsistent. She typically takes 2 naps 4 out of 5 days a week at the sitters, and they're good ones (1-2 hours). At home, I'm lucky to get one from her and it's a max of 1 hour. In other words, what the heck do I know about naps?!

My answer, I would think he's a little young, but who knows?

  • Mads started taking 1 nap at about 14 months.

That's the thing...Clark is really consistent now on naps so that's why when it's thrown off I'm really resistent to think that he's ready for a change.  He has been taking a 2 hour nap in the morning and then a 1 hour nap in the afternoon for awhile now for the sitter and seems to be doing the same for us minus sometimes it'll be 1.5 and 1.5 but always at least 3 hours total during the day and always seems to go back to going to bed at night between 6-7pm.  I think I read that they really arent ready for 1 nap until 18 months?!?

She used to nap from 10-11:30 and 2-3 or 3:30.

    Now she naps from 12:30 - 2:45.

She gets up in the morning at 7:30ish and goes to bed at 8:30.

  • If he usually does 2 naps and still goes to bed at 6:00, I think that yesterday was a fluke and he's not ready for 1 nap.

LOL at you not being ready for one nap.

  • I guess we'll just stick to two naps for now.....should be interesting to see how it went at the sitter today.
  • Sounds like that day was a fluke for you, especially after missing that bottle.

Ella does one nap at day care (has since she was 15m), but still takes two at home. At day care, her one nap is usually 2 hours; at home, her two naps usually total 2 1/2 or 3 hours.

The last thing you want to do is push it. I say stick with two until it's pretty obvious that he only needs one.

  • Sounds like that one day was a fluke but I dont think he is to young.  DD does about 50/50 on 1 vs. 2 naps.  If we are running around and she is in the car in the morning she will take a 15-20 minute nap and then come home and take a 2 hour nap.  Otherwise if we are home she will just take one, 2 hour nap.  She goes to bed at 8:30-9 and  gets up at 8-8:30.  The days she gets one nap she could really go to bed earlier but I dont want to mess up her wake up time so I will keep her up.  I am not a morning person so I dont want her to get up early.  Might be different if she had to go to daycare but since I can sleep in I want her to.  I like that she is up later for DH to in the evenings, gives them a chance to play.
  • My sleep book says around half of kids go to one nap by 15 months.

We knew Andrew was ready when he'd take a morning nap willingly, but kept refusing afternoons, and he was so tired he couldn't get through the day.

So we pushed his morning nap later to mid-day, and he did fine. He was a bit tired during the transition but it was fairly easy.

  • That's the thing right now is that DH and DS need to leave by 630am during the week since DH is a teacher so I dont see Clark going to bed any later that 7pm.  Now on the weekends we may keep him up a half an hour later or so and he will "sleep in" a bit and I mean till like 7/730am :) but that's fine because he stays on schedule for the most part when it comes to Sunday night.

The next two weeks though should be interesting....DH is out of school for xmas break so it'll be him and DS at home instead of at the sitter so I'm thinking his schedule may change a bit like 7-7...we'll see what happens.  We'll keep to two naps for now :)  Thanks everyone!!
