one gig is how many mb's?

Yeah, that's what I'm coming up with too in the conversion chart online. What I was scratching my head about was being at Best Buy once and someone telling me that 500mb is equal to 1gb. It's not different from phone to computer correct? It is still the same I"d imagine?
