Cloth Diapering

BumGenius help

I've been lurking here for a few weeks trying to decide if I could handle Cloth diapering. I've decided that I can, but FI hasn't ever changed a diaper in his life. So I've settled on the fact that AIOs are probably the only thing that will fly around my house.

That being said, I'm being drawn towards BG. They seem to have enough solid positive reviews. But then I bounce back to The Bump and so many people use inserts. Am I wrong in attempting to use an AIO?

Re: BumGenius help

  • I hate AIOs. The BG one especially. They are not nearly absorbent enough for my DD and they take forever to dry. Pockets are much better and once its stuffed, it goes on just like an AIO or disposable.

  • I thought we would be an AIO family also but they take too long to dry for me.  We line dry to save on wear and tear with elastic and velcro and the AIOs literally take 24 hours (when drying inside-in the summer it would be totally doable)

  • DS pees WAY too much for an AIO, it would never work in our house. I prefer pockets so I can determine how much absorbency we need.

  • AIO's are good when they are little, like in between the nb and the fitting  into the one-size phase.

I use the BG 4.0 pockets mostly. they dry WAY WAY faster and they come in snaps which is great because IMO they last longer. I have a few aplix, but most are snaps. I also have a sized FB that is ok, and a HH. BG is my favorite by far, the only negative is the colors are kind of boring

  • We use the pocket and love them. DH handles them just fine. After I wash them I pre-stuff all of them and put them in the dresser. We only use the orange ones for night time so that helps him know which to use when. We have to use diaper cream so I also prep the diaper by putting a fleece insert in and a disposable liner to catch the poop. This also is handy because when we are going out I don't have to do anything but grab however many diapers we need and dash out the door.

They do dry way faster and are not too difficult plus they grow with the baby buy way of the snaps on the front. With the all in ones you have to buy sizes I think. I felt like that was a waste, especially because I only got $2.50 for a all in one I sold back.

  • I have 6 BG AIO's that we use twice a week when DS is in day care and I love them.  I bought them because they are the easiest and I didn't want them to have ANY hassle.  DS has not had any leak issues with them, though I wouldn't consider him a 'heavy wetter.' But they change him every 2 hours so maybe that's why.  They do take 24 hours to dry but if you have enough to use on wash day that you can give the diapers that time you'll be fine.  And if mine aren't dry in time I throw them in the dryer for 10 minutes and that usually finishes them off.

  • I do like that the BG AIOs have a pocket to stuff additional inserts into, but will never again buy an AIO. They take DAYS to dry on the line and at least two hours in the dryer. I actually found mold on the inside of mine when I flipped it inside out to dry. That's how long they take to dry! Stuffing pockets is much more convenient than it is to worry about having enough diapers to last through drying time.

BTW, I always stuff the diapers at once, usually while watching TV. It is just like an AIO by the time SO gets to it.

    YUCK!

Alright, I'm convinced: pockets it is. Now to decide on brand, snaps/velcro, and the fun part: colors :)

Thanks so much ladies, I'm having a lot of fun researching CDing.

  • I don't have advice on the diapers, but wanted to note that my husband had also never changed a diaper in his life.  I found it helpful that he had nothing to compare it to - he had no complaints about prefolds, covers, and snappis since he'd never done anything differently.  He learned to do it quickly and had no idea it might take longer or be more complicated than what other people are doing (either cloth or disposable).

    Good luck!
