I like to be able to see stuff. I went with the Expedit bookcases with their cloth bins for bulky stuff and clear Sterilite bins from Walmart.
ETA: the FLORT bins zip closed for 'million pieces' stuff like Lincoln Logs, and the DRONA bins are open-topped for things like the Little People Ark and plane.

Well, it depends on where it is. My play/craft room is in the basement, so we're not staring at it all day.
I like the clear bins, because the kids can find what they are looking for without dumping EVERY bin on the floor. The new rule is that if you want to play with something else, the bin you are playing with gets put away and the new one pulled out. It seems to be working so far.
I have bins for everything! Puppets, music stuff, PlayDoh, crayons/pencils/markers, kitchen stuff, tea set, doctor tools, regular tools, there's a cube for blocks, one for TinkerToys, one for MegaBlocks, etc.

We have those and like them a lot. We have 2 units set up opposite the way they are in the picture (so the tallest part is on the outside) Then we have some other baskets in the middle. We also have a tall bookshelf that matches. The buckets are sturdy and seem to be holding up well (we've had them about 3 years now). And they are light easy to slide in and out. DD can get them out and DS can get them out and back in. It would be nice if some of them were a bit bigger for some of the bulkier toys, but for what they are, we like the system a lot.

I would get the expidit over that. It holds a boat load of stuff. I have the 5X5 one in DS's room and it holds all his toys and clothes. My friend has about 5 of them, since she has no closets. They are great.
I think kids would grow out of this in 5 years or so and it doesn't hold all that much for the space it takes up.
We have it and I love it for the most part. The only complaint I have is that one of the units the sides have spread out a little too far so one of the bins has trouble staying in place. I like that you can't see the stuff inside though. I don't want to look at a mish-mash of toys.

We have done this exact thing in DS #1's room and I like it a lot! There is lots of room for many different kinds of toys. We have also had them for about 3 years with no problems with the bins or shelves.
We have this exact set in white, and we set it up opposite so that the tall sides are on the ends. I also put baskets on top of most of the levels too to add additional storage. I LOVE this set. It holds more than you'd think. And it has held up great. Had it for about 1.5 years now. Worth it for such a cheap price!
We have it too, one in DDs closet and one in our playroom/office. It's very sturdy and customizable - tons of different bins and shelving options. It keeps everything very organized and neat looking.
We actually have it in our mudroom and it's held up great. I think my kids would just dump everything out of the bins if it were in the playroom though.

That looks great, Lari! Love those empty shelves too!
I'm not so sure I want to look at it. That something to think about now.
