Smoking weed while pregnant....

Out of strict curiosity, well and some boredom, I googled "smoking weed while pregnant" and found something very interesting.

Simply google: Melanie Dreher... She is the Dean of Nursing at the University of Iowa and did a 5 year study on the effects of smoking weed while pregnant.  https://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/1404.html

After reading the first article I watched the youtube video of a presentation she did on her studies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9WorIM0RhA

Makes you wonder what to believe!

personally i havent smoked pot since i was a teenager and couldnt even fatham wanting to do it while preg, just because it always made me feel icky anyway it would probably be 1000% worse during pregnancy. to each their own!

  • I'm sure this post will blow up with the crazy mommas who refuse to look at ham but when I was at young lass I used to partake in a bit of marijuana. I wouldn't be so concerned about my baby getting some of the drug, but the smoke always killed me, and I wouldn't want to introduce it to the baby. So I mean, if somebody is whipping up a batch of brownies... ;) JK

  • For those of you on your phones and cant follow the link:

After 5 years of very extensive studies they found that not only did the children from marijuana using mothers measure the same as those who did not, they excelled in most areas as well.

Its VERY interesting to read. I had a friend tell me that his girlfriends midwife recommended weed for nausea and appetite issues, he told me this during my first pregnancy and I discarded the comment as absolutely crazy. Reading this article makes ME feel like the crazy one! ha ha

  • I have a friend who said HER friend smoked pot until she was 6 months pregnant and the only reason she stopped was so she didn't test positive on drug tests when/after the baby was born, but the baby was born perfectly healthy..

I am one of those anti-drug people tho, so I wouldn't do it anyway if I was pregnant.

  • women did a lot of things in the past that seem perfectly ok for the baby, but it turns out down the road, that it isn't!  just because the baby is a normal size and is ok during the first few years, doesn't mean they will end up that way down the line.  A lot of women used to drink and smoke when they were pregnant and their babies were okay, but a lot of women's babies weren't.  Why risk it?  It's only 40 weeks out of your entire life!

Well put...and don't believe everything you read. There is a reason marijuana is illegal and you shouldn't be using it anyways - why on earth would you risk it and use it while you are pregnant?

  • My uncle and aunt (my dad's brother and sister in law) smoked pot when she was pregnant (and probably did other stuff too, but I'm not sure).  Both of my cousins are slow.  Slow mentally and academically.  I just remember going out to visit when I was a teenager and thinking these guys are around my age...why are they soooooo small????  They were noticeably small for guys that age.  So that's when my mom told me that my aunt smoked weed all during her pregnancy.  I just look at it like I do the other things out there that they tell us we should and should not do.  I think everything should be taken on an individual basis.  What works for some, doesn't work for others.  I will not be smoking pot while pregnant!  Will I eat luncheon meat...yes.  Am I getting a flu shot...no!!!  It's all individual choices.  I love reading everyone's views on stuff like this!!!

  • One day we may find out that smoking pot is the cure for the common cold or something, but as of now I just can't fathom doing a hit off a bong sporting a baby bump lol.  I took care of a girl at work a few months ago that miscarried the morning after she smoked a bunch of pot with her parents.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the m/c or not, but better safe than sorry.  I also know that it is a lot more potent than back in the 70's so that might be why some of us whose mothers smoked it are okay.

  • a friend's girlfriend smoked pot and cigs, and drank mountain dew like crazy when she was pregnant with her 2 babies.  they were not small babies when they were born, they are still chunky monkeys now.  but they are slow.  so is the mom & dad though, lol.  we had a discussion about this when she was smoking pot with the first one and i found out.  it's bad, it's illegal and you don't really know what its doing to the baby.  her answer was "my mom smoked while she was pregnant with her 3 kids." i all but laughed in her face.  2 of whom didn't make it past 10th grade, the last is only 15 and has major social issues.  he still sleeps in mommy and daddy's bed and is afraid of the dark and being home alone.  also, both of her babies are sick a lot too.

like someone else said, it's 40 weeks, why take any unnessarry chances. and if you aren't telling your doctor and hiding it from most of the world, then maybe you shouldn't be doing it.

Yep, which is why I think this "study" is a bunch of BS and if any of those babies are ok, it's pure dumb luck.

I'm also sure their completely fried parents will screw up whatever chances they have anyway.

This. It was even stressed that it was pure curiosity and boredom. I've googled some stupid stuff just because I had nothing else to do. I've never smoked pot, nor do I intend to (mainly because of control issues). But I would completely support legalizing it. There are scientific studies suggesting that alcohol is actually worse for you and more dangerous than pot. Amsterdam has it legalized, and they regulate it so there aren't any "fillers" to worry about. Plus, imagine all the tax dollars we could get! Problem solved.

  • Well at least you can admit that you're thinking is complete ignorance. Lunch meat seems more ignorant to me because you have obviously been TOLD it can be dangerous and get you ignore the facts. There is NO study showing that marijuana has caused birth defects. Even in "What to expect" they say that studies that have been done cannot be linked to marijuana directly because the mothers using were also using other drugs including alcohol and cigs... this is the only study done where the variables were controlled enough to show actual results from marijuana.

So there is a 15 year study showing NO effect of marijuana use, and in most cases children did BETTER. And if you DID read the article or watch the video, when going back and seeking out these children as adults, they all led regular lives and measured the same in aptitude and what not.

And to top it off, all other north american studies openly admit that there is evidence directly linking marijuana to birth defects.

  • After reading these posts it seems alot of you replied without reading the article or watching the video.

    1) This study was done in jamaica where it is legal to smoke, they use it for medical purposes for everyone, adults, pregnant women and children.

    2) Has everyone forgot about medical marijuana!??! Its legal! I know a few friends who grow and use medical marijuana for chemo and other diseases. I understand going to some sketchy dealer on the street is not a good idea because it definitely could be laced. But the study was showing the use of MEDICAL marijuana.

    3) Saying that it is bogus because kids were ok "for a few years" is ridiculous! If there was an issue you would see it in the first 5 years, and ONCE AGAIN, if you read the article or watched the video you would have seen that they went back and found over 40 of the children from the original study as adults and showed NO significant difference between the two different groups of users and non.

    4) My one main point is that there is NO study done to this extreme extensiveness where all other variables were taken into account that can prove to me that smoking pot causes defects. Mainly because our country is run my conservative religious people who wont condone such research.

Im not saying I smoke, but i know people who have and during my first pregnancy i was like alot of you thinking, "what an idiot! That is so horrible!" But when I got to this question in "what to except" and they openly admit that there is no direct link because of inadequate studies, i looked into it further because I was curios if i was being ignorant. Turns out I was.

Sorry to say, but I doubt your buddies who smoke marijuana are smoking legal, medical grade marijuana.

So for arguments sake, to say that smoking marijuana is okay in pregnancy may hold true for this small control group - but it is highly doubtful that the majority of pot smokers are smoking the medical grade weed. More than likely they are smoking for their own gratification and not for any medicinal purposes.

Technically, its not legalized in any country, not even Amsterdam/The Netherlands. Decriminalized and non-enforced, but still a misdemeanor to possess or sell. The coffee shops are illegal, its just that the law enforcement doesn't really bother.

I'm not saying that I am better than anyone, and I don't think anyone had that tone in their replies to this post. I am however saying that because one study said that smoking marijuana is ok during pregnancy, certainly doesn't mean I am gonna go light up a joint and smoke away.

  • I know a few people who have said they have smoked it and their baby turned out fine, but that's like saying "oh i drank while pregnant and my baby turned out fine." Some do...Some don't. It's a risk your taking on your son or daughter when you do anything to your body that you shouldn't while pregnant. If you can't give up something for 9 months to risk a healthy baby then you shouldn't have got pregnant to begin with.
  • I don't think the point of this post is to convince anyone that they should go out and smoke weed while pregnant.  Geez, people.  Can some of you acknowledge that while perhaps smoking weed while pregnant is in poor form, there is no evidence that it causes long term harm to babies?  The OP is interesting because most of us would assume that it IS harmful to smoke weed while pregnant.  If you find non anecdotal evidence that weed smoking DOES cause harm, feel free to post it so that we can discuss.

I don't think that was the point of this post either. But I'm looking at it from this angle; the typical daily/weekly pot smoker does not smoke medical grade pot in a controlled environment. Show me a study that shows there are no long term issues from a mom smoking pot while pregnant that she bought from a street dealer, and then we can talk. Big difference.
