Babies: 6 - 9 Months

started solids today = no poo, HELP!

I know it is normal for introduction of solids in breastfed babies to cause constipation, I started with sweet potatoes today.  I read that certain foods can get things moving such as peas, pears, and infant oatmeal - all of which I have.  My question is, can I start with one of those things tomorrow to prevent constipation or should I wait a few days in case he has a reaction?

  • Even before adding solids, a BF'd baby not pooping for a day (or two, or even three) is not constipation. It's not even cause for worry.

  • We always waited the few days in between new foods to watch DD for reactions.

  • I'd stick with introducing a new food every 3 days.  It's alright if your baby doesn't poop for up to 5 days.  I breastfeed my son too and it shocked me at first when he didn't poop for 3 days and just to warn you the consistency changes and it smells!!!!

  • One day of no pooping is not a big deal. Like p p said, even a few days without poop is not a problem. We saw a big change in frequency/appearance of BM when we introduced solids. I usually start to worry after 3+ days.

My LO has never gone 1 day without a poo, while I know it can be normal.

Pooping frequency/schedules change constantly.  And constipation acutally has NOTHING to do with frequency.  Only consistency.  It's not cause for worry.

  • Add a small ammount of Karo Syrup to the food next time.....you'll find that things keep on flowing.

  • My DD pooped multiple times a day until we started solids. Then she would go a day or two (or 3!) without pooping and it freaked me out. Her Dr said not to stress at all unless she seemed uncomfortable - straining, etc. I don't wait days between foods anyway, so if I feel like she might need a little help I'll offer her pear etc. But, in your case, I'd just wait it out.

Also, offering extra BFing (if you can) will help keep things regular too.
