Baby Names

Emaline?

What do you think of this name?  It's pronounced Emma-line (like the Ben Folds song).

I love Emma, but I want something a little less popular.  I figured we could call her Emma if we like, but she would still have the option of something longer and more unique.

    Emmeline

... and "eh" ? it is NMS.

Are you saying you like the spelling Emmeline better?  I thought of that, but then I probably wouldn't call her Emma for short.  Another alternate for Emaline is Emmaline.

  • My grandmothers name is Emmaline (spelled w/ 2 m's).  I think it's cute.

  • Maybe I'll stick with the Emmaline spelling.  I've seen Emaline, but I'd rather go with what seems somewhat more common.

  • I like the name well enough not really my style, but I definitely don't think it's bad, but I would spell it Emmaline or Emmeline not Emaline.

  • Well and the other issue is people saying Emma-line or Emma-leen, but I guess that happens with a lot of names.  I have friends who always have to tell people how to pronounce their names and I think it irritates them.

  • Hi Janice!!

We really like Emmeline/Emaline and are even thinking of Emalin (Emma-lynn) It isn't a popular choice on the board, but I really like it.

ETA: Congrats on it being a little girl :)

I have a friend named Emmeline and she pronounces it Emma-Leen, so that is how I would pronounce either Emmeline or Emmaline.  Although, if I did not know her I would probably pronounce it Emma-Line.  I really like the name, either way!

  • I like it a lot. :P I prefer Emmaline's spelling.
  • I love the name, but only if it's spelled Emmeline. It's the top of my girl list right now :)

  • I prefer the Emmeline spelling, but the 'a' is fine two. I agree with PP about one 'm' looking like an error. Also, I think it's fine to call an Emmeline "Emma" as well.

  • Emmeline is the best spelling to me. One of my friends named her baby Emmeline and it gets mispronounced often. I'm not really a fan.

  • Interesting, I was doing research and according to many baby books, the root form is "Emeline", everything else is a variation on that name.  The only two forms that make the Baby Voyager Graph are "Emeline" and "Emmaline" (though they only appeared back in the 1800's).

I guess I have time to decide on a spelling!  DH says to just stick with Emma, so we may do that too.  I just like that she would have an option to use the long or shortened form.

  • I love it spelled Emmeline.  It's my DD's name.  I just think the "a" in the middle pops out and looks odd.  DH and I both loved Emma, but like you, we thought it was way too popular.  Then I was watching Anne of Avonlea one afternoon and Emmeline stuck with me.  It's an old name but isn't popular at all.  It's nowhere near the top 1000 for baby names.
