Babies: 9 - 12 Months

uh... thrush? help.

My nipples are itchy, red, and peeling a little. They also look shiny and a little cracked. I first noticed the itchiness yesterday on the right side, and its now starting on the left as well. Not fun.

I dont have health insurance so I dont want to rush to the doctor if I dont need to. DD doesnt seem to have ant symptoms. Not yet, at least.

Can I use an over the counter cream? Has anyone tried Lotrimin or any natural remedies? Acidophilus? Ive read about grapeseed oil, olive oil, etc. The doctor on call said to use Neosporin for a couple days to see if its just irritation. I dont think it is, though. ughh... any suggestions?

TIA.

  • Any way you can get a Rx for Nystain? My doc called it in without seeing my DD. I think w/o insurance Walgreens would have charged 25 or so. HTH

  • How do you feel about natural remedies? I've heard a lot about Grapefruit Seed Extract and Genetian Violet. Kellymom has links on both, but here's a good article that talks about Grapefruit Seed Extract vs. prescription creams.

Here's the Kellymom thrush index. Always a good resource, although you may have already looked there.

  • When I had thrush, they had me apply Lotrimin to my nipples several times per day, and wash it off with water before feeding DD. They also told me to rinse my nipples with a mixture of vinegar and water after every feeding. I know some people have also had luck with gentian violet, but be warned, if you get it on your clothes, I've been told it's literally impossible to get out.

    Good luck!
