Fifth Disease Update

I had posted earlier this week about my possible exposure to my niece while she was infectious with Fifth Disease (parvovirus B19). My OBGYN sent me for blood work on Monday to see if I already have antibodies for this virus or if I have been infected.

I got my results today and it turns out I have the antibodies for this virus (must have been exposed to it at some point in my life a long time ago) and it showed negative for recent exposure! That's really good news because it means the baby is protected against the virus as well. The CDC's website says that only about 50% of women are immune to this, so I'm really thankful that I already carry immunity to it.

  • Oh, that's great news!
  • I also have antibodies to Parvo (didn't even know my doctor tested for this).  My parents don't remember me ever having this as a child and I don't remember ever having it so somewhere along the line I was exposed.  My doctor said that Parvo can cause miscarriages so glad to hear you are immune.

  • One less thing to worry about, among the wide variety of things out there!

I asked my Ob to add Parvo to my plethora of first appt labs. It showed immunity too, which made me feel much better because after you get it once, you always have full protection.

My dad doesn't remember me having this as a child either. Oh well! I guess somewhere along my 29 years I had it.

  • Great news! I'm one of those women that do not carry the immunity/antibodies.

  • That is good. I don't carry it and I am a preschool teacher so that worries me a bit.
