1st Trimester

How many of you still eat raw sushi?

I know it's not recommended to eat raw sushi. There are many reasons why but my doctor said the primary reason is because our immune system is lowered and it's easier for us to get sick. I haven't had raw sushi yet but before I got pregnant I had it at least twice a week. I'm considering having it once every so often.

Do you still eat raw sushi?

Re: How many of you still eat raw sushi?

  • Unfortunately no Sad and I miss it so much!  Our sushi place makes excellent rolls though, so I've been pigging out on their different veggie rolls.  California rolls are fine too.  You want to stay away from the ones with lots of mercury (my favorite...the thick cut raw tuna!).  You are always at risk of getting a parasite if you eat raw fish...so I think that would be a major issue if you got a parasite when pregnant.  I had friends that continued to eat it with no problem though---

  • I know I'm gonna get flamed for this buuuut... I ate sushi throughout my 1st pregnancy and I plan to this one too. Of course I didn't eat any tuna, albacore or raw shellfish like scallops, and I didn't eat any pretatory fish like halibut. I think people overdo the don't eat sushi stuff. I think as long as it is from a good reputable sushi place (which ours is) you're fine. mmmmm, sushi

Oh, I'm def not gonna flame you! Big Smile I am very much considering going out tonight for a few salmon rolls since we always go to reputable sushi places (and we've been going there for years without getting sick).

I just googled it and it seems there are lots of pregnant women that still eat raw fish when pregnant (I mean Japanese women aren't going to give it up during pregnancy!!!)  I love the everything in moderation thing...and if its from a good place and doesn't smell "fishy" you're probably fine!

  • Where I love sushi, we do not eat ever! I wish we did as it so yummy. So it will probably remain the same. My favorite is spicy tuna!

  • Yep, I am.  Everything in moderation.  The place I normally go to is reputable so I'm not worried.  I get a tuna roll a month b/c of the mercury but I get salmon 2 or 3 times a month.

  • I do! Ob said to watch mercury levels, otherwise totally fine from reputable place.

  • My OB said it was fine as long as it was reputable and watch the mercury.

I don't eat it because I don't like it, but if I did, I probably would.

  • Yes I do! If it's a place you've been to several times it should be fine. I'm not going to freak out about every little thing. I lived in a bubble last pregnancy and I still had a m/c. I've had it twice since finding out. I don't go over the recommened amount of a weeks serving. Which would be hard to do eating sushi.

  • I think I will later on in the pregnancy.  I'm not right now because the thought of it makes me wanna vomit which really sucks b/c it was my fave thing to eat before getting KU.
  • I use to eat it weekly but not while pg. I would do cooked and veggie rolls but I am already high risk and have IBS so I have a touchy stomach so I tend to be conservative. I have many friends that continued to eat Sushi and their kids are fine. Like pp moderation :)

  • Basically all fish that is to be served raw (sushi, tartare, ceviche) in the US has been flash frozen...to kill parasites, mandated by the FDA.  That said, with my first pregnancy, I had sushi two or three times.  The last time, I threw it all up during a bout of morning sickness, so that was that.  I have only had cooked sushi this time.
