I was really excited to get one when we got married 6+ years ago, but honestly, the only time I pull it out is when I have a ton of baking to do. Which is only around the holidays. For quick things, I find it way too much of a pain to lug out, and just use my little hand mixer
I'll be the lone person who says I use mine every week. More in the summer--I have the ice cream maker bowl and attachment and we concoct our own ice cream recipes all the time. It's a lot of fun, when we have other kids over for dinner, to turn it on when we sit down to eat and have the ice cream ready when it's time for dessert. I have also gone nuts making bread every week.
Ditto R9. I borrowed one from my mom for mousse recently. Otherwise, everything is mixed by hand. Does anyone remember when Bella got her hair caught in the mixer last winter some time? We never bought a new one after that. At first I kept forgetting, and now I've realized I don't need it. I do have an immersion blender which is so awesome. I also don't have a food processor or blender. No particular reason, they just broke and I never replaced them!
I couldn't live without my food processor, blender or Kitchen Aid! I use them all quite frequently- regularly enough that they just live on the countertop so there's no lugging them around.
I'm something of a small-kitchen-appliace junky but one thing I've never owned is a hand-mixer. If I'm going to have to wash a mixing bowl and beaters I might as well just use the Kitchen-Aid stand mixer!
I cook everything from scratch, so I think I'd have use for them. It's just that I make do just fine without, so I haven't spent money on them!
Mine were all gifts. For the last five years or so I've always gotten kitchen stuff for Christmas, birthdays and anniverseries. There was one year that dh got me a couple nice knives for my birthday, one more knife for Valentine's Day, a pressure cooker for our anniversery and some stainless steel saucepans for Christmas. That same year my mom got me a Kitchen Aid for Christmas and my father (divorced) gave me money to go buy whatever I wanted so I got a food processor. Repeat that same pattern for about 5 years and my kitchen is decked out, LOL.
