knitters:help

Or should I try to find help on the knot? tongue in cheek:)

I am wanting to learn to knit. I just watched a youtube tutorial,

How did you learn?  What was your first project? Did you make any mistakes that I should avoid?

Any advice is wanted, thank you:)

Re: knitters:help

  • I taught myself to crochet on the Internet, learning to knit there is totally doable. Start with something rectangular like a scarf. Also, start with something that won't take you forever (like a blanket or a sweater). Find a really pretty yarn that you love to touch and go to town! Just cast on enough stitches to make your scarf wide enough and knit until you think you are done.

For most projects you'll need to know a knit stitch and a purl stitch, so watch videos on both of those.

Make sure that your needles match the type of yarn you are using. It will say on the package what size needles they recommend. I would recommend starting with a bulky yarn (so cute and fuzzy) and a larger size needle.

     Have fun!

  • I taught myself online, my first project was a super simple hat for my (then in utero) baby.  Its a learning process, you will improve as you go.  I made a patchwork blanket which was a great project because it was mainly just multi-colored squares that I sewed together later!

There is a picture at the end of this post, and also the hat jack is wearing in my header I  made in an hour.

I also made the cocoon for Jacks nweborn photos, seen here.  Also really easy!

    Its a fun hobby!

  • If you have a Michaels or Joanns near you, they do classes for crocheting and knitting all the time. The classes usually are around $15 and will teach you basic to advanced stuff. I learned how to crochet with their classes and loved them.
  • larger yarns/needles are OK, but don't go to big. Size 8 is a nice start Also, stay away from any fuzzy-looking yarn. You want to be able to see your stitches clearly, and with a lot of the novelty or fuzzy yarns you won't be able to see what you're doing, when you've dropped a stitch, etc.

I like knittinghelp.com because it lumps everything in one place. There are videos for everything imaginable, and they're all good quality.

  • I took a local community class.  I have a hard time trying to learn stuff like that from a book or a video.   I've been trying to teach myself to crochet from a book and online stuff and I just can't manage to do it.  I think having someone there to show you how to hold your hands and what to do is invaluable.   Once you've got the basics, I think it's easy to figure out variations and how to read patterns.  Do you have a friend who can knit who could spend an hour with you getting you started?
