Pregnant after a Loss

Safest for constipation?

My doctor suggested Miralax, but I think that may have a stimulant in it, which makes me nervous. I have read about people using colace and milk of magnesia. What's the difference between these and which is safer? What would PgAL use? I have to do something about this constipation!!!!

  • Oh...and I have tried eating every type of fiber I can find, MIL's crazy Ecuadorian remedies, prune juice, and tons of water. NADA.

  • I had horrible constipation and was trying all the things you said to no avail - doctor told me to STOP the fiber and do 2 tabs of Colace (OTC stool softener) with TONS of fluids for a week. It took a few days but everything worked its way out of my system. :) By any chance are you on progesterone supplements? That's what was causing my constipation. Once my doc let me stop them @ 13 weeks I felt much better. Hope this helps.

  • I am not sure if you are okay with this.... but suppositories work great... and are safe.  Just... kinda gross.

  • Best food remedy: a salad of raw kale.

Medicinal remedy: Colace ... and when desperate times call for desperate measures, a Fleet or saline enema. Ick!  Not terribly pleasant, but better than not going for a week, IMO.  I think the concern with enemas is that you shouldn't become dependent on them.

Yes I am on progesterone for 2 more weeks. I know that's part of the problem so I am hoping it eases up once I am off the progesterone. The weird thing is, I have been on it since 4dpo, and the constipation didn't kick in until this past week! DH is picking up some colace....praying it works but I am so paranoid about taking things.

  • Shredded Wheat... =)   The mini ones Blueberry Muffin flavor are delicious!  I also do a Colace too if I need to.

I tried Metamucil for a while, but I think it was too much for me as it made me have  (TMI) loose stools.  I don't think my body likes FIber pills or powders as I always seem to have the loose stools if I take them.

Surprisingly, I did not have constipation issues on the progesterone, mine hit with 2nd Trimester....

I heard you girl, and DH was supposed to pick up colace on his way home, but he didn't get it because it said on the box to "contact your doctor if pregnant".....Angry

  • Sorry you are not feeling better yet! I am going to go highlight "Colace" on my approved meds in case that happens to me too. I really really hope it works for you soon.

  • Colace works okay for me, but Miralax is the only thing that really gets things "moving." I didn't notice any issues with it being a stimulant.

  • I ate about a cup full of dried apricots and was surprised to see they had quite the laxative effect! I'm about as far along as you and my constipation has really started to kick in in the last week or so.  ugh. I think it's not helping the bloat factor, either!
