Foam blocks for 2.5 year old?

DH wants to get DS a set of foam blocks to stack.  DH hates the noise when DS knocks down a tower of wooden blocks onto our hardwood floor and thinks foam is safer (when thrown) and eaiser (eh) and less noisy.

Reviews online of various types are mixed and if we get them, i'd look for some that are non-toxic.  Do you have a set you love or hate?  Any experience at all before I order?

Thanks!

  • We have a handmedown set and while they are less noisy and hurt less when thrown they are much harder to stack large towers of. If you are looking for something less noisy what about the cardboard ones that look like bricks? DS's pre-school has those and they are a hit with him and the older boys too.

HA!  I feel like those are a preschool staple! I had them when I was in preschool!!

They can also get beat up very easily. They are easy to dig your nails into and rip pieces of the foam out of.

Can you get some type of play rug that you put down before playing with the wood blocks?

That is the best idea yet!  Thank you Julie.  I get DH's concern (noise) and his desire (to do the thing DS loves at school with him at home), but foam blocks just weren't sitting well with me.  DS does better handling heavier items like wood blocks anyway.  I'll redirect later and skip the blocks for now.

    Thanks!

  • IKEA has a set of 4 cloth blocks for like $7. E loves hers. She will stack them, throw them, toss them in her house, push over the towers, and since they are cloth no sound is made except her screams of glee.
