Cutting bottle and sippy cups gets me all confused and gives me anxiety.
I mentioned to my DCP (who is a friend of mine and mother of 4) about starting to mix the milk with formula thing. you should have seen the look on her face. according to her this is a HUGE no no and i have to wait till the DAY she turns one...blah blah. I know iam a first time mom and only 20 yo but is this SOOO horrible that at 10 months iam thinking of doing like 6oz of formula and 2oz milk in her sippy cup?
I am afraid that if i do this and inform my friend/DCP that she will dissapprove and secretly not continue with the process....(who knows if she would really do this but iam paranoid and i hear horror stories about how some DC's and DCP's dont follow through with the parents requests. and how would i ever know) ya know.
i know iam rambling but this is what i sit at work and think about all day...
help with honest advice please!
thanks ladies!
Re: All these posts about....
Nope not so bad... I plan to start introducing at 11 months old. I need the help anyway -- I am so tired of pumping.
Just tell her that your pedi said it was fine (of course, check first).
I don't know that I would start with milk at 10 months, DD is going to be 1 Dec. 20th, and while we've begun to introduce dairy (she's been on soy formula) with yogurt and cheese, tastes of ice cream, and egg nog, we are not going to really try to start giving her milk until after her 12 month appointment.
That's just what we are doing, if your pedi is fine with introducing milk regularly into her diet at this point, then I would think that's fine. Although I'm pretty sure pediatricians say to wait until 12 months because baby's can't digest the protein in cow's milk very well yet, and it contains minerals in amounts that can damage the kidney's.
I do choose to introduce cow's milk before 1, but there are plenty of studies that show you shouldn't. You need to do what you're ready for, or more importantly what you're baby's ready for.
FWIW - I never ever have mixed BM with whole milk or put whole milk in a bottle. My kids get sippies of whole milk and bottles of BM. The whole milk is cold and is offered with meals and sometimes snacks. According to my pedi, a balanced diet should replaced nursing/bottles NOT just whole milk. In fact, children need a minimum of 12 oz of dairy a day and a maximum of 24oz and that includes cheese, yogurt, etc. My pedi is fine with introducing whole milk around 10 or 11 months in the sippy like this and we have with DS. My girls and DS drink milk fine - not a ton, but they also love cheese and yogurt and I know they're getting plenty of dairy. I just never freaked out about how many oz of whole milk they were getting. As long as they're eating something, I'm happy.
My pedi told us we could start introducing whole milk around 10 or 11 months so he's fully transitioned at 1 year. Then I come to the Bump and see people say that cow's milk will not touch their baby's lips until at least 1 year. It's all very confusing and makes you constantly second guess what you're doing.
I truly think it's different for every baby. My son is eating a huge variety of foods, including a lot of dairy, and has always responded well to new foods. So my mommy gut (as well as the pedi) told me it would be fine to introduce milk gradually before 1 year. We've been giving DS bottles with 1 oz whole milk and 5 oz of formula since a little after 10 months and he has responded fine. We're not expecting or planning for him to be fully transitioned by 1 year, but we'll see how it goes.
