Indiana Babies

toddlers and TV

I can't decide if this is a dumb question but here goes...

Maya doesn't go to daycare (Shawn SAH) and we don't really let her watch TV.  I mean, it is on football almost all day, all weekend but we never turn on kids shows and it isn't on during the weekday.

Could this be hindering her talking?  Shawn isn't a huge talker anyway but I know he talks to her during the day...  When do you think that kids actually start learning things from TV?

Re: toddlers and TV

  • Right or wrong, we let Ryan watch TV, but only things like Sesame Street, Baby Einstein and occasionally Chuggington (his all-time favorite), oh and Mickey.

Now, this isn't to say he watches them all day, every day. I'll have music on during the day, or whatever, but if I need to occupy him for a bit, I'll turn on one of the above-mentioned shows.  Surprisingly, our DT says it's fine...

  • I always said I would NEVER let the TV be the parent and replace us in stimulating her and interacting with her, BUT circumstances changed in our house and sometimes the TV is the only thing that works to give me some sanity to feed Nora or make Evie dinner etc.

That being said we limit it to "educational" shows.  She watches a lot of animal planet (she loves to watch the animals)  She can now name a lot of the animals when she sees them on TV.

The only "kids" show she watches is the Backyardigans because 1. its not annoying for me to hear, and 2. it has a lot of singing and dancing that she sings and dances along with.

She has a couple of baby Einstein and brainy baby videos about animals that we will put on if there is something scary on animal planet (ie snakes, i hate snakes)

I'm not sure if its hindering her talking but I think that if you choose educational videos etc you may be able to use it as a tool to help her with her talking.

  • I must be the oddball...we rarley have it on a kid show and if we have it on anything kiddy it's the kids music station.  I think Clark could careless at this point about the TV...he's all about playing with one toy and then the next, etc.  I want to stop having it on when he has dinner but I guess DH and I are use to having it as background noise.
  • That is a good question...my husband and I are pretty quiet people and I wonder sometimes if that affects the pace at which Nick talks.  It probably does.  I don't think that not watching tv would hinder her talking, but at the same time, it probably also wouldn't do any damage.  I feel like just now, nick has started to understand what is happening on tv (he watches every morning as we get ready) and he'll laugh when Goofy falls or something.  I tell myself that might also mean he understands when they do numbers/shapes/colors or whatever.

Do you have any of those my first word books?  I really feel like reading those is what helped Nick learn a lot of words.  It is pretty boring at first, just pointing out objects instead of reading a story, but after a while as he knew more and more things on each page, they became really fun to read.

  • For us, I would say that there is zero correlation between TV and her vocab.  All of the words she's learned are from books or food.

I find myself saying, "Olivia can you say..." a million times a day.  It's really annoying, but seems to work well.  It might take her a couple tries, but she usually can start to sound something out pretty quickly.

  • We put Disney Playhouse on in the morning when we're getting ready (if she's up). She has absolutely picked up on some things through some of the songs on those shows - mostly Special Agent Oso (she, I think, has learned to count to three on this show), Chuggington, and the one with the claymation animals.

This!  Those books are so boring, but they really do help.  I started making up little stories just to make the book more interesting.  LOL.

  • I have a very verbal LO and she has been that way from the beginning.  Lots of my friends ask what I did and I tell them that we talked to her all the time, read her books a ton, even when she was a newborn.

We do let her watch TV...she watches Nick, Jr or PBS kids or on demand kids shows.  She loves Sesame Street and Super Why and watching Super Why has made her interested in spelling.  I honestly think she learns from the TV shows because she picks up things from them and talks about them.

Making up a story is a good idea, I wish I'd thought of it...it is so much better now that he knows lots of the words.  We've now started asking him what color everything is (everything, and I mean everything, is purple, by the way!).  I also say "can you say..." or "nick, what is this" a million times a day.

THis is similar to us.  We usually have the TV when we are home, I need background noise and we get poor radio reception in the house, she usually doesn't pay attention unless we are watching kids shows but even then she's distracted by her toys.  I do feel that she's learned from the TV.  She went through a spurt of saying "xhe xhe (sp)" thank you in Chinese, something we aren't capable of teaching  and using it correctly.

  • We have very much avoided TV.  The NICU doctors told us to avoid it and some other things.  We have just let him started watching a car movie but he'll only watch it about 5 minutes.  He is language delayed but I'm doubtful it's from not watching TV.
