High-Risk Pregnancy

asymmetrical growth restriction?

So I had a sonogram this morning (32w1d) to check the baby's growth, and the head was measuring on track, but her abdomen was at the 4th percentile.  The tech mentioned the words "asymmetrical growth restriction" and said I should have more protein.  The OB, however, did not seem concerned and told me that babies grow all different ways and I shouldn't worry about it.  4th percentile seems rather small to me though.  Anyone else have experience with this?

Re: asymmetrical growth restriction?

  • We are dealing with this and have been diagnosed with asymmetrical IUGR. Our little guy's head is 50th% but his abdomen in <2nd%. I'm being monitored with fairly regular ultrasounds and ob visits, and have been told that I'm at increased risk for preeclampsia since there is likely some type of blood flow restriction to the placenta which is limiting the nutrients he's getting (so they instead get diverted to the brain and heart rather than the abdomen). Basically, if I develop high blood pressure or if his growth stagnates, they'll deliver me early. The good news is that even though he'll likely be born small, he should catch up with his peers within a year or so.

  • My LO's head is measuring small and I am going for a level 2 ultrasound next week. Hang in there!

  • that seems odd that the OB isn't concerned or even checking into things?? For my last pregnancy he measured perfectly normal until our 34 week and his abdominal % fell off the curve. His head was about 75% and his abdomen was about 4-8%, according to my OB anything less than 12% is considered IUGR.

They continued to monitor me and get me as close to full term as possible and I was induced 2 weeks later. He was born 5#3 and totally healthy and is still completely fine fwiw.

I'd certainly be expecting my OB to do some more growth ultrasounds and to look into more, I'd be concerned that they just acted like it was no biggie.

  • Thanks for sharing your experiences!  My OB is doing weekly ultrasounds from now on to monitor growth, so I'm being checked...but yes, it was super strange to me that he was like "eh, don't worry about it".  And he didn't mention anything about inducing earlier than 39 weeks (I'm scheduled to be induced then anyway because of blood clotting issues).  I am going to try to see a different OB in the practice and see if I get the same response.
