Veggie Moms?

I switched my diet to be completely vegetarian about 4 weeks ago.  Now that I am pg, I especially want to make sure I am eating just right and getting all of the nutrients that I need.  Of course, I'm taking a prenatal vitamin and trying to eat as many fruit, veggies, and healthy fats and proteins as I can.  Are there any other veg moms that can chime in and give me some tips?  I am going to make sure my doctor keeps a close eye on my nutrients through blood work, too... just to make sure they stay at a healthy range.

 Thanks for any input!

Re: Veggie Moms?

  • I'm a vegetarian as well. I don't really plan on changing my diet much from what it is now. I try to include protein in each meal with a balance of healthy carbs and mostly vegetables and fruit. Of course, all I've wanted for the past week are bagels, but as soon as the nausea subsides I just plan to continue eating lots of kidney and black beans, eggs and greek yogurt for the bulk of my protein.

  • Thanks, Ashlee.  I think I'd be more secure in my choice if I had been doing it longer.  I know it is the right choice for my body and health... and I know I can sustain a healthy pregnancy as a vegetarian - I just needed a little reassurance!  Thanks!
  • I've been vegan for years and although this is my first pregnancy, I've seen my sister who is also vegan have two happy healthy pregnancies. I'm just ensuring that I still get enough protein through plant and legume sources and eating healthy snacks 24/7! Good luck!

  • I'm not pregnant yet, but I am vegan. As long as you eat healthy, and make sure you're eating enough, you shouldn't have a problem.

Congrats on your pregnancy and being a new vegetarian!

  • I've been a vegetarian for about 8 years and don't plan to eat meat during the pregnancy. I will admit that since I got my BFP I have been paying more attention to what I'm eating and trying to pack in more protein and calcium. Nuts, peanut butter, Greek yogurt, soy milk, etc. I think you might have to be a little bit more adamant about making sure you're getting enough protein, but that is normally how it is for vegetarians anyway!

  • Oh, I also wanted to add that it's not the first thing that comes to mind, but cottage cheese is very high in protein, and its a great option for topping salads or just having a bowl as a snack, so that's another one to remember!

Congrats on your decision to be a veg :)
