Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much BM does LO eat while you are at work?

DD has been home with DH for the past 3 days since he is off.  I pump about 16oz of BM a day and leave that with her at home or DC and she is always running out.  I nurse her in the morning before I go to work at about 6:30, she has cereal and fruit and then a 4oz bottle at about 9, then a 6oz bottle at 11, another 6oz bottle at about 4 and then I nurse her when I get home at 6.

Any Ideas on how to keep her full longer?

TIA

  • Wow - that's tough.  I don't have any advice, I'm sorry.  Is she STTN?  16 oz during the day isn't that much if she's only nursing 2 other times.

DS is 5.5 months and eats 8-12 oz at daycare.  I nurse him at 3 am and when he wakes at 7 and sometimes again at 8:30.  Then he's off to DC and I see him at 5.  We nurse 2-3 times between 5 and 7 (his bedtime).  Oh and he doesn't have solids yet.

Is she gaining weight fine?  I'd hate to suggest giving her smaller bottles, but you might want to ask DC if they are following her cues for being full or if they are just trying to get her to finish her bottle.

  • DD was doing the same as yours, about 16 oz. However DC told me that it seemed like she was still hungry after finishing her bottles so I've upped the amount from (4) 4 oz bottles to (4) 5 oz bottles.

She doesn't always take all 3. Typically she will have a bottle in the morning, 4 bottles at daycare and then at least one or two bottles before bedtime so in total she is getting about 30-35oz of bm a day.

  • My little guy takes 3 7oz bottles during the 9 hours he's at daycare.

  • My LO is 4 months and takes three 4 1/2 oz bottles at daycare (he's there from 6:45 until 3:30). I nurse him 3 times (once in the AM when he wakes up, once when we get home, and then once prior to bed...sometimes there is a fourth nursing session in there, depending on whether he sleeps through the night).
  • LO takes 3-4 bottles while I'm at work and drinks anywhere from 3-4oz at a time. So 12-16oz I tried offering bigger bottles but she never takes more than 4 oz, usually less. How many times do you nurse in the evening? I nurse about 2-3x in the evening/before bed, and at least once during the night and then once in the morning.
  • At 4 months, DS takes between 15 - 20oz during the day between 6:30 am and 4:00 pm and I nurse twice at home in the evenings.

He is not on solids yet and is STTN, if that makes a difference.

  • I should add that I nurse her again one more time before she goes to bed at around 8 but she never eats that much she usualy only takes one breast and then passes out.  She sleeps through the night, and wakes on her own at about 6.  Some nights we give her veggies and she nurses at 6 pm.  The Dr. said she looks great and gave her an A+ at her last checkup.  She is around 11 lbs now.
  • DH and I talked about him / daycare maybe feeding her to much at one time today when I met them for lunch, but he said that she hogs down the bottle and then cries when its empty like she wants more.  I of course never see any of this because when I'm around she doens't get a bottle.
  • I nurse DD at around 5:30 when I get up. I pump about 16 oz (3 sessions) while at work which I make 4 bottles of 4 oz each. I get home at around 4:30. I nurse DD at around 5:00, 7:00 and then 9:00 when she goes to bed. She will normally STTN.

ETA: DD is 4 1/2 months and not eating any solids yet.

  • I was told that you're supposed to leave one ounce for every hour that you're away from LO, but I know that my LO takes much, much more. She STTN, so I think that factors in, too.

In terms of the bottle feeding, how is your LO fed? We give DD a 4-5 oz. bottle, and our caregivers have been instructed to pause between each ounce and burp her, and switch sides that they're holding her, too, to replicate the pace and practice of breastfeeding. Your LO might be acting hungry immediately after the bottle, too, just because it takes about 20 minutes for her brain to register that she's full. If she's hungry again in an hour, then she probably needs more, but if she goes several hours between feedings, the current amount is probably accurate.
