Jeans Sizing?

I'm finally ready to break down and buy some maternity jeans.  How do I determine size?  I read somewhere that you should order up one size (I usually wear 28, so I'd order 29 maternity.)  But then I read somewhere else that you should order up two sizes.  Does anyone have a good guess about this?  I am hoping to find something on ebay so I can't try them on.

Re: Jeans Sizing?

  • I thought that you should order the size you are pre-pregnancy.  I'm not positive though. Ones I bought (cheapies at Kohls) were S, M, or L. So I didn't have to buy an exact size.

  • S, M, L, XL would definitely make things easier!  I guess if they try to fit all pregnant women into 4 sizes of pants, if I'm a little off on size it won't matter much.  I'll probably split the difference and order one size up.

  • Some are small, medium and large, and some are 2,4,6,8, etc, and some are 28, 29, 30 etc.  I've heard you are supposed to buy one size up from your pre-pregnancy size if you are buying 28, 29, 30, etc., but i'm sure it would be the same as your pre-pregnancy size for any other type of sizing.

  • I've always heard get your normal size.  I've tried some on and so far that's held true.

  • I know Motherhood Maternity carry sizes up to 3x, and I believe Old Navy/Gap have some mat pants that go up to a 28

Personally, I went from a size S to a L by the time I had DS.  But I also started off with winter clothes and ended up in shorts and dresses for summer, so I would have been buying different clothes anyway.

Everyone is different, so I'd just order your pre-pg size for now or if you're in between two sizes go for the larger one

I bought a few pairs at Motherhood and I went up a size, just because it was so early and I figured I can grow into them.  I also bought a pair at Old Navy that were a size and I was able to fit into my pre-pregnancy size with a little room to spare.  I'm sure every brand is different, but the S, M, Lg ones are a nice way to go.

  • I bought a pair of cordory maternity pants last night at ON and I got my regular size.  At this point I'm not growing anywhere but my belly so a larger size would be falling off my butt and legs.

Depending on the return policy, could you order both and return the ones that didn't fit?

  • Thanks everyone!  Lots of good info here, I appreciate it.

  • I would say, when in doubt, go with your normal size, but it really depends on the shape of your body, and the jeans, IMO. I am normally a size 12 and carry my weight in my torso, so I actually went to a size 10, since I don't have to accommodate my love handles. Now my maternity jeans fit me nicely in the butt and thighs. One pair I have is VERY fitted, though. I don't think I'll be able to wear them the whole time. Like PP said, if it's pretty snug, go one size up, because you'll probably grow into them at some point. (Esp. at the end of 3rd tri.)

  • I got my normal size in gap maternity jeans (not full panel), and they are big.
  • Forget the pants all together and get leggings and sweater dresses...so comfy! Smile

I did snag a pair of jeans at ON the other day and bought them in my pre-pregnancy size and they fit great, are a bit loose and still have room to grow with me.  My sister also gave me a pair of dress pants from Motherhood and they're a medium (I'm normally a 6-8) and still a bit big on me.

  • I have one pair of demi-panel jeans from Gap and they are my regular size and they are totally fine. Work pants were another story! I think I need to go down a size in those, otherwise walk around looking like I have a load in my pants.

I got mine from ON too. They are a little big on me right now, so I have to wear them with my BellaBand. They are very comfy!

I couldn't agree more! Its all I've been wearing (you know, on the days I take off my hubbys pajama pants for something other than work pants) I am going shopping this weekend for some dress pants for work and some heavier pants (jeans cords something) because we do have winter days when even my lined leggings (thats right, I found leggings lined like sweatpants, HEAVEN!) aren't enough to keep me warm.

  • I have one pair from Kohl's and one from ON.  THe Kohl's pair has gotten too big and the ON pair was one size larger, so it fits big too.  I'm considering buying one size smaller so that I don't look like I have saggy butt.

  • I also bought my size, but I also waited until 12 and more weeks.  I like things to fit well and not too big.  They all fit until the end, just some were a little more tight, but not unwearable.  I gained weight early on, though, so stayed the same size in my legs and just gained belly.  I hope to only gain in belly this pregnancy, but that is probably wishful thinking.

  • I bought a pair of maternity jeans a few weeks ago - bought my pre pregnancy size. I have grown in the past 2 weeks, and the jeans have grown with me. (Look for something with stretch and a bit of give.)

I think she means 28 waist size, which is how high-end jeans are usually sized (like men's pants). I agree that it's likely you will go up in size - I bought some nice jeans on sale in my usual size (32), but sadly I think they will not last through 3rd tri. I'm hoping that my butt is less pregnant this time around.
