elmoali: did you say to the husband flat out that you planned to do Bob and Sue smith and not use titles? it sounds like you just asked about her last name. He probably assumed you were going to use titles hence his response. I doubt she will be offended by Bob and Sue Smith.
]I think you just read too much into it.
this.
Also you better bet if I go through training for whatever and receive a doctorate degree, then I will expect to be preferred to as such. Its a respect thing.
So, in theory, I may some day be Dr C____ the nurse. (I have many instructors in my current program who are Dr so-and-so and they're nurses).
Can you pretty please be a proctologist? I still always read your name as bumnurse.
My BIL is a dentist and he goes by Dr. Tony 'Smith'...
The DDS behind his name states "Doctor of Dental Science", so I would argue he is a doctor, just not an MD.
I always thought it was Doctor of Dental Surgery
This. I've worked for quite a few dentists in my day, and THIS is correct. DDS is also identical to DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine).
I just emailed my BIL and asked him what the DDS stood for and he emailed back "Doctor of Dental Science" so then I emailed him back again and said it is not "Doctor of Dental Surgery" and his response was "Both".
I'm not going to email him a 3rd time to clarify.

I did not know they were the same thing. What degree does an oral surgeon have? (I could google it, but I'm not.)
It depends. First, they are a DDS or a DMD (same degree, the only difference is where they went to dental school). Additionally, they CAN be an MD, depending on whether their residency program offers an MD degree or not. Some may also have an MSD (Masters of Science in Dentistry).
Late to the game today but I was responding last night to the original post. Just curious, where did you go to dental school mopsie? Are you practicing now?
I graduated from Univ. of Michigan in 2005 and am now working part time. Thinking about maybe teaching at the school 1 day/week?

I went to Tufts, graduated in 2008. I'm back at work 4 days a week, and I'm debating whether to go back to teaching in January. I'm already so limited in how much time I have to work (DD is watched by my mom twice a week, my MIL once a week and DH once a week) so if there's any more time that she can be watched, I'd rather use it to earn more money, not drive into Boston to teach for 3 hours and get stuck in rush hour traffic coming home.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that we have some anti-dentites in our midst.
