Two Under 2

1 yr old and a newborn

would you let them share a room?? Still early and I do not know the sex of #2 but my room is too small for a crib, so I guess they will have to share or DH will lose his office:)

Re: 1 yr old and a newborn

  • Maybe look into getting a co-sleeper for your room.  I wouldn't put a newborn in a room with another child until he/she is sttn.  Do you want both kids up through the night or just one?

Mine share a room but we didn't put #2 in the room until around 3 months, basically when she was consistently sttn.

  • Nope no way. I would not do anything to mess up ds1 sleeping through the night. Don't mess with a good thing there.

  • Not right away. LO #2 will sleep in our room in the beginning. At around 5 months or so we'll make the move to have them share a room.

If space is an issue, I'd look into getting a fisher price rock n play sleeper for #2. It takes up hardly any space, and can hold babies up to 25lbs. My DS slept in that until 5.5 months old.

  • I know exactly what you are going through right now!!!!

Our room is ridiculously small and we did/do not have room for a crib.  Here's what we did:

We got a small cradle (which is plenty big enough for a newborn) and pushed our bed up against a wall to make more room for the cradle.    Good times.   It meant that we both had to get out of bed on the same side... oh well.  It created way more room.

We have three bedrooms and three kids!     So, our 'office' is now in our bedroom and Dominic (4 months, now) is in the old office and Olivia and Natalie share a room.     We are in the process of finishing our basement, so the office will eventually be down there.    It's not ideal, but it works for now.

  • I have 3 kids sharing a room.  4.5, 14 months, 2.5 months.

The older kids learn really fast to sleep through any noise.  We do have a bassinett in our room, but we really only use it if the baby will not go back down

  • DS will be almost 16 months when LO#2 is born. We have a loft that is the same size as DS's room and could easily be converted into a bedroom, but we don't want to lose the living space. (It currently has a desk w/ computer, TV, Jumperoo and some toys.

We'll keep LO#2 in our bedroom in the beginning and then have them share a room. DH and I are both teachers, so we'll likely make the transition when between 2-4 months old when we have off for the summer.

Would you consider co-sleeping with your LO? Originally DS was in the newborn napper of our pack 'n play, but we ended up getting a Snuggle Nest and DS slept in bed with us. It would be a great way to save space. We never planned on co-sleeping, but my doctor suggested the Snuggle Nest because I was breastfeeding and had a back injury that made lifting DS from the Pack 'n Play or crib very difficult.

  • We are just about to put DD in a room 5 feet from big DDs room. She JUST barely is able to tune out the baby's cries. But I dont think I would put them in the same room yet. Little DD is right outside our door with a sound machine because she i a loud sleeper, but she is close enough for us to hear her cry, but not "talk".

Big DD will wake up if you breath within  3 feet of her room, oy!

  • thanks ladies. Yes my older DD is a light sleeper just like her mama. Already broke the news to hubby that he is losing the office when they are bigger we will make them share a room.
