School-Aged Children

Working Part-time with school age kids?

I now work full-time.  My twins will be starting kindergarten this year.  I plan on working PT once they start school so I can see them off to school and be home when they get home.

Anyone else do this?  Any thoughts or suggestions I should consider?  I'd like to have off one day a week and work 5-6 hrs/day  4 days a week.  TIA.

  • A great place to look for PT work is within your current industry.

Has anyone in your office gone from FT to PT?

Would you feel comfortable discussing switching to PT with your employer?

Not all will do it but if they value you and they're able to do it within the scope of the type of business you do they may just work with you.

Otherwise... there are TONZ of women looking for just the job you describe.

A job within the school district is a good fix if you can find one.

Otherwise a lot of it depends on your skill set, experience and willingness to go back to school to train for a job that offers more flexibility than your current one.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I work part-time at the job where I worked full-time before I have kids.

I've been there 12 years total and I'm bored.  But, they're EXTREMELY flexible and I'm extremely lucky to have it.

I'm a consultant - I bill 24 hours, but I'm not actually not in the office that long.  I drop him off and then DD at her daycare and I get into the office a little after 9.  Most days, DH is able to pick him up at 3, I work until 4:30 or 5, pick DD up and meet them at home.  Sometimes, he can't do it and I'm able to bail out early and get him.  I make up the hours at home.  Or I bill leave hours.  Depends on how busy I am - both with work and otherwise.  My income is piddling compared to DH's, but every penny helps.

I'm also able to bail out of the office to do volunteer stuff - tomorrow morning, I'm helping in his classroom and I'm chaperoning his field trip to see the nutcracker next week.  Again, as long as I can make my schedule work for meetings and get my work done, it's fine.

I have the other 2 days home with DD.  It's nice to get some alone time with her - and catch up with housework, etc.

Let me reiterate that I was really lucky - I don't know a lot of people that have been able to do this.  Good luck!

I've worked @ my job for 9 yrs now and I've told my boss for 4 yrs that that's my plan.  Thankfully, he's very receptive, plus one of my co-workers is only PRN right now and would love my FT position.
