What to Expect at First Appt.?

For any of you that have already been through the first appt., what did it look like? I will be having mine next week, prob. around 6.5 weeks. The receptionist said they will just go through lifestyle and other factors...whatever that means.

TIA!

Re: What to Expect at First Appt.?

  • Sometimes you'll get a pap if you're due for one. Probably just do a basic physical, weight, bp, pee in a cup, etc. They'll want to know a pretty extensive family history, too, so make sure you know that info from your SO's side. They'll probably just let you know all the dos and don'ts and set up the next appointment is my guess. Good luck!

  • Yes at the 1st appt with my 1st pg the did a lot Q&A's, a quick pelvic exam, did a few labs I think and I was due for a pap so while they were 'in there' she just did a quick one.  We mainly talked about a lot of things!

  • Ahh ok thanks... that is what I was thinking. I was hopping that they might try to listen for the heartbeat too!

  • You would be able to see the heartbeat on the US but not hear it on the doppler yet. With DD1 I saw a midwife and we didn't hear the heartbeat until 12 weeks, couldn't find it at 10.

  • I have an appointment tonight but just with a nurse. I think she'll just confirm the pregnancy and answer questions. I'll let you know if there is anything besides that! I don't think I meet with the doc for a few more weeks...

Ok, I heard about the family history stuff - but how is it possible to get family history info from his side without telling them yet that we are PG???  Is it okay if I don't actually know anything about his mother's pregnancy? (since I don't think she has ever told him much about it) - if I do need to know that info we're going to have to tell her sooner than we'd planned (I wanted to wait until we saw the baby to get her hopes up, since she can be somewhat emotionally unstable).

My mom is going to be typing me up a page or two of her pregnancy history - she had a complicated one with me and was telling me about it, but I told her to write it down for me to give to the dr b/c she's also a dr and there was a lot of medical jargon in there.

Non-PG related family history I think we'll just give our best guess...

At my OB, by family history they mean whether there any congenital defects or diseases that run in the family that should be watched for. A history of high blood pressure, etc. Not necessarily a detailed historyof your MIL's pregnancies.

  • Ok - so I had my first appointment last night. They confirmed the pregnancy and suggested I get a flu shot since I hadn't done so already. Other than that it was really simple, they made me fill out a questionaire regarding any known defects, down syndrome, heritage etc in the family on both sides. Nothing too specific that you wouldn't know off hand. They also asked about history with drugs, smoking etc. Pretty easy! I also was given a folder and a pregnancy book filled with great info that I thought was nice.

    Good luck!!!
