Sleeping in Toddler Car Seat

So DD has moved into her bigger car seat, she's 10 mos.  The thing is, when she falls asleep, her head is always bent so far forward, it can't be comfortable.  It's either practically on her chest or off to the side, is there anything you can do to safely not make their heads hang like that??  I even have the car seat reclined fully.

Re: Sleeping in Toddler Car Seat

  • I know for the little car seats that they sell those neck pillows.  Do they have those for the larger car seats as well?

Thanks for the question - we're about to upgrade S too, but I didn't think about her sleeping in it during car rides.

  • They do sell small travel pillows for kids, but my son has slept with his head nearly on his lap in the car, and he was fine.  Think of it this way, you're not that comfortable sleeping in the car either!   But if anyone has other ideas, I'd be interested!

  • Meh. DS has been doing that awkward chin-tuck-sleep thing for months and doesn't seem to notice.
  • No answers, but those neck pillows seem like they would push the head even more forward.  D's head usually lolls to the side.

  • Michael flips from the "broken neck baby" sleeping posture to leaning back with his head upright.  He has slept for hours like this and it does not seem to bother him.

  • I just read somewhere that the only thing the AAP recommends is a blanket rolled up and placed like an upside down u around their head.  That said, the first month or so after we switched to the convertible car seat, Ellie did the same thing, and it looked soooo bad.  But now she mostly sleeps with her head back - don't know if it just took some time to get used to the new seat or what, but I haven't seen her hunched over in ages.
  • Thanks, I guess it must be normal.
