Space Heaters

Does anyone use an electric space heater in their nursery?  Personally I don't like the idea of a heater on all night, even if it has a thermostat and shuts on and off, is that being paranoid??  Our house is generally around 69 or 70 degrees, I'd almost rather have the house warmer than have an extra heater in DD room.  Does anyone know if they're safe?

Re: Space Heaters

  • Personally, I would NOT use one. I'd dress your DD warmer (fleece jammies with a sleep sack/blanket sleeper) and keep the house at 69/70 degrees.  It doesn't have to be warmer than that.

I wouldn't risk a fire starting from a wire short or something. I never slept with one on when I was single. I would use it to warm the room and then shut it off before bed.

  • We do not either.  Like Robyn said, I'd be too worried about the fire hazzard.  Plus those space heaters use up a lot of electricity - at least that is what our local electric company says.  We keep our house at 70 degrees and S is in footed pjs and a blanket to keep her warm.  I'm going to start dressing her in fleece pjs once the temp drops some more.

  • Leave the house warmer, you are not supposed to use them when you're sleeping.  see this https://www.uos.harvard.edu/ehs/fire_safety/fire_spaceheaters.pdf

There are a lot worse links, so the hazards greatly outweigh the comfort.  I've been tempted to use one too, as WI gets very cold, but warm pajamas and blankets make up for it!

  • I'd be too worried about fire. Apparently the optimum temp for babies to sleep in is 68-70 anyway.
  • My dh is a firefighter and he thinks this is a big no no. The risk is not worth it. I would turn the heat up a degree or maybe dress in another layer/blanket.

  • I wouldn't leave it on all the night long. We have used one in Ada's room when were there and awake though. It easily gets down to around 65 give-or-take in her room. She wears socks, a long-sleeved onesie, a fleece footie, and a fleece sleepsack to bed with a crocheted blanket or two on/twined around her. She wakes up feeling comfortably warm.
