TTC after 35

OK .. this is starting to get on my nerves ...

DH and I conceived on the first try when I was 38 and are blessed with a healthy baby boy. I just turned 40 a month ago and we have been trying since August of this year. We only have sex around the time when  I have been ovulating because I have been stressing about other things and he has been working a lot. I also have had a bad cold since the beginning of Novemer (if that might have anything to do with it (been on antibiotics).

I'm going to call my Dr. tomorrow because I think I'm getting my period again. Should I panic yet?

Re: OK .. this is starting to get on my nerves ...

  • You are in REALLY great company here.  There are many who have been around here for years while they TTC.  My thought is that your panic is a bit premature.  Many OB/Gyns will not refer patients until they have been unsuccessful for a year.  If you are over 35, most will refer to a RE at 6 months.  I think it is wonderful that your DS was an easy conception.  If you stick around here a bit, you will see that many here have not seen that kind of luck.

It took me 23 cycles to conceive DD with unexplained IF.  I am on cycle 21 this round, at the ripe young age of 41 (DH is a bit older).  I am on a decision making hiatus at the moment.  My insurance will not cover anything related to fertility, so we are left with the hard decision of going to the RE and hoping for an non-guaranteed good outcome, or funding an adoption. I really was so disappointed after the first few months of TTC passed with no BFP.  Somehow I had hoped that my previous pg somehow reset my body.  Notsomuch.  I remember feeling how you feel right now.

Have you read Taking Charge of your Fertility?  Charting? OPKs? CBEFM? Supplements?  I would try those before going to the specialist.  You will be able to know if and when you are ovulating, and the more info you can give the RE, the quicker he can order tests and make recommendation.  Good luck to you.  Feel free to post away in here.  Many of the ladies have a lot of great information to share.  We have all felt like you do right now.

  • Congratulations on your little one and I'm sorry that the second go around isn't as easy for you. I think its a bit premature to be worried. Most average couples take a year to conceive, and those of us over 35 can take even longer.

How do you know when you ovulate? Are you temping or tracking your cycles at all? As hav2run said, read Taking Charge of Your Fertility for a great overview and insight into learning more about your body. Also, I personally love Fertility Friend (check out my ticker or anyone elses really...) It's free. They have great tutorials.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I am TTC #1 and am 37. We have also been trying since August with no success. I made an RE appointment for January as that will be 6 cycles for me. It is very frustrating!  You should chart your temp if you aren't already so you can be sure you are timing sex correctly and to see if you are ovulating.  Good luck and post a lot. We all need support!

  • I feel you, since in a weird way I was more frustrated when I was at  3/4/5 months trying than I am now at 9 months (I guess I'm just more pessimistic now). Good luck, and I agree with PP to see an RE after 6 months, which I guess would be January/February for you. You can talk to your OB but at 40 you're probably better off going right to an expert.

  • Ummm ... what is a "RE"?
  • RE is reproductive endocronologist.  Specialist in this area versus going to your regular ob/gyn.

  • I agree with other PP.  It can be a long haul! My frustration comes and goes.  But definitely go to an RE.  No time like the present.  As for me..  I'm skipping a 3rd IUI and going straight for IVF next cycle.
About me: A pixie in the city, 41, TTC #1 since May 2010, married 18 years. Diagnosed with, surgically removed, endometrioma Aug.2010 Sept 2010 IUI #1=BFN, Oct=cyst/bfn, Nov 2010 IUI #2 = bfn. Had to postpone IUI #3 b/c of a cyst natural=BFN. Skipped IUI #3, decided to go for IVF. Found/removed uterine polyps Jan 2011. IVF cancelled, no follicles. IVF #2: 3 great embies put in on Easter Sunday = BFN. Hoping for another chance at IVF in July. TTC is NOT for wimps. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ticker/2fab90/ttc.png
  • Your story is very similar to my own.  We tried for one month to get pregnant when I was 37 and it happened right away.  So I figured, 39, no problem.  Well, we have now been trying for real since June not pregnant yet.

The thing I like about being with an RE, we started with ours in September, is that you are so closely monitored that you know exactly what is going on.

I dont think you should panic.  It is good that you are going to go to the Dr, there might be a very obvious and fixable reason that you aren't pregnant yet.  Whatever is happening they will likely be able to offer options to you and information.  Good Luck!
