Doc saw 2 sacs but only one heartbeat

Did anyone with twins first experience an ultrasound where the doctor saw two sacks but only one heartbeat.  I was told the other one just probably didn't make it and will come out eventually or be obsorbed by my body.  I was just hoping that maybe it was too soon to see the other one clearly (this was at 6 wks).  I go again at 10 weeks 12/22.  Happy to have one but hope to see the other sack with life as well.

first of all - congrats! you are pg!

everything is touch and go that early on... the heart starts beating in the 6th week- so if you are a day or two off- can miss a heartbeat. I can't believe they are making you wait 4 more weeks to know if you are pg with twins or not - is this an RE or an OB? I would ask to have another US done in a week - demand it... b/c if you are indeed pg with twins you'll want to know ASAP so you can read up on it, take any precautions you might need to take, etc - a twin pg is not the same as a singleton- and the sooner you know it's twins the better for you and the babies.

every day matters that early on... so it's impossible to say what will happen.  Disappearing twin syndrome is pretty common, but it's also common to miss a heartbeat by a day or so....  only time will tell. 

the good thing is that a disappearing twin has no effect on the health of the remaining baby.

For me at 6w2d I could see 3 sacs, one had a HB. At 6w4d we were able to see 2 HBs. The third was absorbed by my body and cause no problems. Early on, things change so quickly that 1 day can make all the difference. Keep us updated!

At 7 weeks we saw one baby, one empty sac. I went in again at 8 weeks for spotting and there were 2 sacs and 2 heartbeats. So, it is possible.

We only seen one baby at 7 weeks.  5 weeks later, there were 2.  I'd say 6wks is pretty early.

At my 8 week app. during the first ultrasound they saw 3 sacs but only 2 babies, they said the 3rd sac would eventually be absorbed.

Hopefully 2nd sac will show another baby next time.

At 5w6d we saw 2 sacs 2 heartbeats.

Congrats on your pregnancy!  I had my first ultrasound at 5w1d, and we saw two sacs but only one had a yolk sac.  They told me that it was too early to tell if the second sac would develop or not.  I went back at 7w2d, and we had two heartbeats.  It's still very early, and it's possible that they are developing at slightly different rates.

At our first ultrasound around 6wks we saw 2 sacs and 1 HB.  I was worried about it like you, but when we went back at 8 wks we saw 2 HBs and are now expecting our twin girls to be born anyday!  Good luck

I had my first u/s at 6 weeks and we saw two sacks and only one HB.  They scheduled me to come back a week later and the other heart had started.  I was told that this is totally in the normal range for the heart to start beating.  I agree with Goldie, call back and demand to come back sooner so they can check again.  One thing I've learned throughout this process is that you must be your own advocate for the care you receive.  You need to know ASAP if you are carrying twins, not only so you can take care of your body but also for the piece of mind of knowing for sure what's going on.  I can't imagine if I'd had to wait 4 weeks to find out if the second baby had a HB!  GL!

At 51/2 weeks, one heart beat, at 6 1/2 weeks two heart beats!

I got your PM but it won't let me respond to you!  It says user not found so I'll post here what I was going to send you.

When we went in we saw an RE so we were going for US pretty regularly.  When he saw 2 sacs and 1 hb I didn't want to get excited about twins either.  I really didn't want to tell anyone it was twins, but we did tell our friends and family because we figured that if it did turn out to be one, we would want their support during that time.  We went back at 8 weeks (2 weeks later) and the Dr said before he began the US "don't be suprised if its just one this time" I felt that was a little upsetting but he did the scan and found 2 sacs and 2 hbs.  I am now 36wks and have had an uneventful pregnancy.  I didn't have any morning sickness, and they are now saying that if I don't go into labor by my appointment next week we will have to talk about induction!  Its crazy because I worried my whole pregnancy about PTL and the Nicu and now it seems it was all for nothing.  When is your next US scheduled for?  If I can answer any questions, don't hesitate to ask.  When I was in those early days, I needed the support of the other women and it helped me a lot.  Good Luck!

Hi and thanks for responding!) i don't go in until the 22nd of Dec.  It is a long time to wait but I think my Doc. may have kept it like that so I didn't get too excited and then turn out that the other one never developed.  I had a pregnancy like that last summer where I had all the symptoms but the embryo stayed the same and never grew after 6 wks. At 9 wks I had a D&C.  He did say however that i will probably cramp and bleed as my body expells it but I haven't had that so part of me thinks that there is a chance it developed or maybe it got absorbed by my body.  I can not wait to find out on the 22nd.  It seems so far!

I see you are a teacher as well! Let me know how sub plans work out for you.

We had the same thing last week ... 2 sacs one with HB and one the DR was not able to find anything but he said it was so small and very narrow at one end so he was not sure.  He was not able to detect a yolk sac in B either but the sac it self grew so I am not sure what that means. we go back on THUR for another U/S  we will be at 7 weeks.  I am not sure why they bother to tell us we are pg with 2 if they are unsure? I hope B is just hdding and nuzzled in there.  We have been trying for a year and this was our last try and we did IVF.

We went in for our ultra sound and the DR. confirmed 2 babies and 2 heart beats at 7wwks! YAY ... we are so happy !
